Nearly identical Native American story

[edit]

In American Indian Myths and Legends (Pantheon Books, 1984, ed. R. Erdoes and A. Ortiz, ISBN 0394507967, 9780394507965) there is a nearly identical story except that in this version it's the guest's testicles rather than ears that the girl says the host plans to cut off. Makes me wonder (1) if the story arose independently in Europe and North America, (2) if not, who got it from whom, and (3) if the familiar Grimm's version is bowdlerized from an older version that's retained in the Native American version. I have no idea how to go about researching these questions, but maybe someone else here can. —Mahāgaja · talk 12:44, 25 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
