concerning the notability notice
[edit]- Started this entry, soon received notice "that the subject of the article does not satisfy the notability guideline for Biographies." Rewrote text right away to add citations and bring out notability element. I've recently completed a PhD dissertation on this area of communication research, including an extensive literature review and after 5 years of research and dozens of conferences attended, found Rodriguez' importance second only to John Downing's. I've confirmed this with numerous other scholars in the field. Her Fissures is considered one of the 2-4 seminal books that appeared around 2001 which helped spark the current wave of interest in alternative media reasearch, and one of the first to attempt critique and go beyond the simplistic alternative-mainstream dichotomy. Googlescholar does not accurately reflect the amount of research that cites her, as few are available online.
- I would also point to the discussion around establishing 'importance' of academic researchers, especially the critique that the criteria for 'importance' have traditionally favor old men from first world countries (who tend to quote primarily other white men). If wikipedia is to be more relevant to what is going on in research, we'd better not wait until someone is dead to write about them, and take care not to exclude female researchers.
- Finally, Wikipedia is dreadfully understocked in entries in media and communication reasearch- contrast this with entries in the natural sciences or popular culture. I would recommend approaching the leading associations of researchers in the field, IAMCR, ICA etc. for collaboration.

- I think the comment about lacking in "notability" is way off target. I attended the OURMedia06 conference in Sydney last week, and this lady plays an important role in that network. She is also a prominent academic in that field. --fredericknoronha 10:48, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
- the notability guideline required is not 'for living persons' but 'for academics'- with a little clearer formulation, several of the points can be covered. e.g. her work is widely quoted in academic publications, her theory of 'citizens media' widely referred to and critically debated in scholarship and included in a recent imporant anthology in the field. need more time to get that down though. anyone else qualified welcome to add. - her work is cited in all major research about alternative media published since 2002 (and many even before that). some papers that cite her:
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&lr=&cites=12795099185706916837 questioning notability tag should really be taken off. it's insulting and just shows the person who tagged it doesn;t know much. as for the text needing revisions with more citations, will take care off that sometime in the next few months. anyone else is welcome to add.
