Ecuadorian?
[edit]This edit introduced the concept that he was Ecuadorian, however it's not clear how he achieved that title. He was born in Argentina. There's no dispute of that. He has not played for any national team. At the time he was playing in Ecuador, but that wouldn't make him a citizen of that nation, if so, he should be considered American now. I have removed this item from the lede and a reference to support this change in nationality should be added somewhere in the article before it's added back into the lede. Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:38, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- He became ecuadorian citizen in 2011,(source) he and his ecuadorian girlfriend have a free union, for this reason he got the citizenship. He can't play for the national team because FIFA's rule says this (source):
- page 65
- 7 Acquisition of a new nationality:
- Any Player who refers to art. 5 par. 1 to assume a new nationality and who has not played international football in accordance with art. 5 par. 2 shall be eligible to play for the new representative team only if he fulfi ls one of the following conditions:
- a) He was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
- b) His biological mother or biological father was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
- c) His grandmother or grandfather was born on the territory of the relevant Association;
- d) He has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant Association. Paulce1527 (talk) 16:32, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- 7 Acquisition of a new nationality:
- Thanks. This should be mentioned. I will add it shortly. Since he's a footballer though, he's not considered Ecuadorian just because of his citizenship. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:35, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
In Ecuador, football clubs can have 4 foreign players, in 2008 and 2009 he was one of the four foreigners, in 2011 and 2012 he played as ecuadorian. Paulce1527 (talk) 16:52, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- MLS has similar rules. Once you are given residency status, you are removed from the foreign player roles, however those players are not considered American or Canadian. See Sébastien Le Toux (International section) and Gershon Koffie as two exampled that immediately come to mind. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:58, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
The difference is that he has all the rights and duties of an Ecuadorian citizen, for example he can vote, he has an Ecuadorian identity card and an Ecuadorian passport. It's not just for playing football as ecuadorian. Paulce1527 (talk) 17:12, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
- That is not a difference. That is the case for both of the players I mentioned. Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:10, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
