I think the connection to the Notting Hill Carnival is overstated here. Although Jones was a pioneer is celebrating Carribean performing arts and the idea of 'carnival' in the UK, any link between her indoor winter carnivals in a variety of town halls across north London and the summertime street party in Notting Hill is pretty tenuous.

She's rightly recognised for what she did but she wasn't the only person putting on West Indian music and dances and I suspect if she hadn't called her events carnivals and gotten broadcast on the BBC no one would be connecting her to what became (after her death) the Notting Hill Carnival. Rhaune Laslett, who organised the original 'Notting Hill Fayre', was totally unaware of Jones's events, according to her son. "My mother knew nothing about Claudia Jones and her carnival parties in Kings Cross. What happened on the streets of Notting Hill had nothing to do with those indoor celebrations. The Notting Hill event could have become an Irish festival if for some reason the Irish element had been stronger. It just so happens that Russ Henderson came with his steel band and the flavour of the Caribbean and as a result it was immediately popular amongst the mass of West Indians who were living in the area."

Can this be clarified? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Murkeyc (talkcontribs) 23:07, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think there should be information on this page about her position as chair of the National Women's Commission of the Communist Party, which she accepted in 1947. While in this position she formulated her theory about the triple oppression of Black women. Her work for women's rights was a significant part of her life, through which she made an important theoretical contribution to feminist thought. She is often not given credit for her work around women and I think it's important to have it in her biography on Wikipedia. See the article in Political Affairs linked at the bottom of this article, or see Red Feminism by Kate Weigand (The John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore: 2001), especially chapter 5. Need a primary source for "No Irish" etc signs

[edit]

"At this time in Britain, many landlords, shops and even some government establishments displayed signs saying "No Irish, No Coloured, No Dogs". Jones found a community that needed active organisation". Could we have a definitive reference for this - re government establishments and shops as well as landlords - as it is often disputed that such signs were common (or even existed)? Primary sources: a mention in Socialist Worker won't do.

Edits made to give some neutrality to article. Long politically loaded excerpt from her writing at the end of the article was rv -- this is not a blogsite or fansite. Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 22:13, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Claudia Jones was a leading communist in the USA and fairly well known in Britain for her political activism as a communist and as a supporter of anti-imperialist struggle in Asia, Africa and Latin America. That is how she described herself. The term 'black nationalist' to describe Claudia Jones seems to be a rather dubious claim and one made by black nationalist biographers who wrote of her life long years after she had died. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiltiport (talkcontribs) 19:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It is the usual problem with articles about people of this sort; they get filled with POV tripe about how great and progressive Communism is, while editing out critical references that show it is nothing of the sort. Before adding references to such criticism, tho, best to get the page semi-protected to avoid an edit war. 76.102.148.112 (talk) 05:11, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
