Are distances correct?

[edit]

There seems to be a problem with the distances. Clipperton Island is 10° 18′ N. At 10°N latitude, 10° of longitude ≈ 730 miles (1175 km). The CFZ spans 31° of longitude (96°W to 127°W), which means that its length is around 2265 miles (3644 km). The 4500 miles (7240 km) in the article are almost double, and don't seem right! (The ref is to Encyclopedia Britannica, which indicates the CFZ starts at 2°N and 153°E - this is about 360 km south of Namoluk atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia - but it should be 153°W! That's an error of around 3250 miles (5000 km!))

Section 1 is 113-127°, i.e. 14° of longitude ≈ 1022 miles (1645 km); cf 900 miles in the article.

Section 2 is 107-113°, i.e. 6° of longitude. No length is given, but using 1° = 73 miles (117.5 km) the length should be 438 miles (705 km). Using the distance in the article for Section 1 (1° = 64 miles) the length is 385 miles (621 km).

Section 3 is 101-107°, i.e. 6° of longitude. No length is given, but using 1° = 73 miles (117.5 km) the length should be 438 miles (705 km). Using the distance in the article for Section 1 (1° = 64 miles) the length is 385 miles (621 km).

Section 4 is 96-101°, i.e. 5° of longitude. No length is given, but using 1° = 73 miles (117.5 km) the length should be 365 miles (588 km). Using the distance in the article for Section 1 (1° = 64 miles) the length is 321 miles (517 km).

Adding these distances gives 2263 miles (3643 km) using my 1° = 73 miles (117.5 km); using the article's 1° = 64 miles gives a total length of 1991 miles (3203 km). Neither of these is anywhere near the stated 4500 miles (7240 km).
