Historical Sources

[edit]

The article - particularly the sections on clan historical events - would benefit from inclusion of footnotes referring to a broader range of Scottish history sources, as at present it is heavily reliant on a single encyclopedic source. Smd49 (talk) 08:39, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mac Mhic Iain

[edit]

In what context does Mac Mhic Iain appear in Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia. It currently appears in the article's infobox as a Gaelic name of the clan. I wonder if the book lists it as some sort of Gaelic title borne by the chief - like for example MacCailein Mòr and Mac Mhic Ailein borne by the Campbell and Macdonald of Clanranald chiefs. Can you double check this Quintus?--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 21:01, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Brianann, the Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia states that the "Gaelic title" of the Scremgeours is "Mac Mhic Iain".QuintusPetillius (talk) 16:39, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Any objection if I move it down from 'gaelic names' to the 'chiefs gaelic title' part of the template? It seems to me that the name likely refers to the chiefs personal title rather than the name of the clan.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 21:23, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure enough, I plugged it into Google Books and the first hit was Moncreiffe's The Highland Clans (page 98), which states: "The Gaelic title of the Scrymgeour chiefs was Mac Mhic Iain".--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 21:28, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry I have already moved it. Cheers.QuintusPetillius (talk) 07:37, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
