"The Clan Motto originates from the Battle of Teba"
[edit]Reference to the battle of Teba derives from two suppositions. The first is that this is the action in which Sir James DOuglas ( and his men) were killed. This remains disputed See 'Battle of Teba' article. The second is that Sir Robert Menzies was a member of DOuglas expedition to Spain. There is no evidence for this in the nearest contemprary sources (e.g. John Barbour) and appears to derive from family folklore notably the source cited here, "The Red and White’ Book of Menzies" (1894) that describes an anecdote that does not correspond to the C14th sources and cannot be taken as reliable, not least given that in all those narratives, all those accompanying Douglas in battle are killed and therefore the anecdote quoted can only have been transmitted from beyond the grave.
For those reasons I am inserting a cautionary 'allegedly' into the text. JF42 (talk) 13:15, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
