[edit]Why do we have Clachan and Clochán as separate pages, is there a reason? Akerbeltz (talk) 01:41, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
Really diminutive?
[edit]I'm not an Irish linguist, only German and English, but I don't think that -án in this case is a diminutive suffix, I rather think it's a suffix used to form a collective noun. "clochán" would thus mean "a collection of stones", usually with the connotation "man made", possibly also "to be used by humans". This would apply to the meanings "causeway" and "beehive hut" to be found on teanglann.ie. I've sent them an email to see whether they agree. They also don't have the meaning of settlement under the lemma "clochán", but I've pointed that out to them as well. A.-K. D. (talk) 17:42, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
