Parallel vs Commercial Cinema
What is the definition of 'Parallel Cinema' being used in this article? I think both lists need significant editing, but hesitant to do so without some discussion.
The parallel cinema list includes films that were mainstream, commercial films:
* Aguner Parash Mani (1995) of Humayun Ahmed,
It also includes films that were not "parallel" but rather were classics of that time:
* Mukh O Mukhosh (1956) of Abdul Jabbar Khan * Asia (1960) of Fateh Lohani, * Kakhono Asheni (1961), Kancher Deyal (1963), Sangam (1964), Anwara (1966) and Jiban Thekey Neya (1970) of Zahir Raihan,
It also includes films made in West Bengal by Ritwik Ghatak and Goutam Ghose
* Titash Ekti Nadir Naam (A River Called Titas) (1973) by Ritwik Ghatak,
The Ritwik Ghotok you can argue to keep on this list as it was a co-production. But Goutam Ghose's project was entirely filmed in West Bengal, as such I have deleted it from the list.
I suggest the list be split into three parts: Mainstream Commercial Classic Cinema Parallel Cinema Shilpakala (talk) 21:45, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Shilpakala
Merge discussion
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was to merge. Dhallywood remains a duplicate of six sections of this article, and no one recommended against merging. Editors are welcome to expand this article by drawing distinctions between commercial, art-house, and other portions of the industry. Worldbruce (talk) 00:26, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
As far i know, All Bangladeshi films are made in the Bengali language, based in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka and the entire film industry is known as Dhallywood! so it makes no sense to have two articles on exact same topic!---Samudrakula (talk) 19:32, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
Dhallywood is a subcategory of Bangladeshi filmmaking. It's distinct from other branches such as art-house cinema and television-oriented feature films. It's defining features are it's high emphasis on commercial productions, use of big-name stars, and wide distribution networks, which by no means is descriptive of the entirety of Bangladeshi cinema. If the articles are merged, I'd request that the term "Dhallywood" not be used interchangeably with "Cinema of Bangladesh" and be accurately portrayed as a part of the larger industry.aswar314 (talk) 09:03, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
- Merge - Seems to be a large overlap between the two articles and very little to distinguish them. Bazj (talk) 19:55, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Merge - I would be inclined to support the incorporation of the Dhallywood article (which is pretty bare at present, consisting mostly of lists) into the Cinema of Bangladesh article. That said, I'm not sure there's much to merge. Cinema of Bangladesh has a pretty solid historical narrative from the origins of Bangladeshi cinema up to the present; I don't think there's anything of value in the Dhallywood article that we don't already have in Cinema of Bangladesh (which already has lists of Bangladeshi cinema personalities). The best outcome I think would be to have a search for Dhallywood redirect to the "Present" section of Cinema of Bangladesh. Tigercompanion25 (talk) 16:48, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
On the opening sentence
The opening sentence currently reads "The cinema of Bangladesh has had a significant effect on South Asia". Not only is this not supported by the source (and I have tagged it as such), but it's the kind of vague thesis statement that you couldn't get by with in middle school, along the lines of "The American Civil War had a big impact on America", which is true, but it's also so broad as to impart no real information. Could we perhaps change the introductory sentence to a reflection on the current state of the cinema, like what we have in the second line? I'm going to go ahead and make that change; if someone objects, we can discuss it here.Tigercompanion25 (talk) 17:22, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
