Taxonomic validity
[edit]O'Keefe and Street (2009) re-assessed Cimoliasaurus magnus based on the original description by Leidy (1851) and concluded that it represents an elasmosaurid. Since Cimoliasaurus is different from cryptoceidoids, Cimoliasauridae was sunk as a junior synonym of Elasmosauridae.
