Split the nodding dog?
[edit]Any thoughts on splitting the exciting dog mascot from the rather boring company? Egg Centric 18:03, 15 May 2012 (UTC)
- I am not convinced the article needs splitting. The article is not too long and the dog is not separately notable. Op47 (talk) 21:31, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
- Ooooh, no! Lugnuts And the horse 09:42, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Also...."In the company's TV advertising the computer-animated Churchill dog....." Wasn't it at some time an animatronic dog? 78.148.201.27 (talk) 14:01, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Oooooh yes! Lugnuts Dick Laurent is dead 13:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Awards section
[edit]I have removed the awards section because the awards themselves, nor the awarding body have their own article and are presumably not notable. I would prefer not to see large awards sections for non notable awards since this would devalue the notable awards. Op47 (talk) 20:41, 20 August 2012 (UTC)
Milestones
[edit]This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest was declined. We prefer paragraph-style pros over sub-sections. The current structure is better. |
Hi all, I represent The Royal Bank of Scotland Group which is the owner of Churchill Insurance. We've reviewed the development of this page and thought we'd reach out to you with a suggestion to reorganise the 'History' section and introduce milestones. We understand that the page is owned by the Wikipedia community and we won't make any direct changes. The history section is a little text heavy at the moment and would look much cleaner if you could introduce milestones with the key date. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Here are our suggested changes:
1989
[edit]In June 1989, Martin Long founded Churchill Insurance as a direct car insurance provider. Long was backed by Winterthur, at that time a Credit Suisse subsidiary. One of Long’s early team members, Henry Engelhardt, went on to found Admiral.[1]
1990
[edit]This year Churchill started selling home insurance. In February 1990, Churchill’s first TV ad wend on air was added to the Churchill product range.[2]
1993
[edit]The company grew over the next few years and in October 1993 signed a three-year deal to sponsor the World Indoor Bowls Championship.[3]
1994
[edit]October 1994 saw the adoption of a bulldog as the company’s mascot.
1995
[edit]In August 1995 Churchill launched its first website and a credit card. It also became the first UK insurer to offer motor insurance estimates via interactive media kiosks. In the same year, Churchill set up the Accident Repair Centre.[4]
1996
[edit]In 1996 Churchill was awarded Investors in People and ISO9002 accreditation. This was also the year that the nodding dog was introduced to its advertising. A new product was also launched in the shape of breakdown cover, provided in association with Green Flag.
1997
[edit]In 1997, Churchill Insurance was named in Britain’s Best Employers for the first time. In this year, the company moved to its current headquarters, Churchill Court and expanded into travel insurance and pet insurance products.
1999
[edit]Churchill acquired motorcycle insurance broker Devitt Insurance and NIG. The company also launched Churchil.com website, enabling online car and home insurance quotes.
2000
[edit]In 2000 Churchill won its first Your Money Awards and it became shirt sponsors of Crystal Palace FC, the football team Martin Long supported and would eventually share the chairmanship of.[5]
2001
[edit]In 2001 Churchill bought Prudential’s home and motor insurance business.
2003
[edit]RBS Group purchased Churchill Insurance and formed RBS Insurance which included Churchill, Direct Line, Privilege, Green Flag, UKI Partnerships and NIG in 2003. RBS Group paid Credit Suisse £1.1bn for the insurer.[6]
2004
[edit]A Churchill balloon launched in 2004. It is the size of an office block, measuring 34 metres wide by 24 metres high.
2006
[edit]In 2006 the high profile "Challenge Churchill" campaign was launched, involving the people of Britain challenging the brand mascot to find them cheaper car and home insurance.
2008
[edit]A new look website went live in October 2008. Following the bail-out of RBS by the UK government in 2008, the EU demanded that certain Group assets be sold off, including the company's insurance division.[7]
2009
[edit]In 2009 Churchill adopted a new strapline: "Count on Churchill". Television adverts were launched featuring the Churchill dog alongside celebrities including Rolf Harris CBE and Roy Walker. Martin Clunes has been a regular companion of Churchill in recent years, with Clunes taking the dog in his motorbikes sidecar and threatening to bath the dog after finding shampoo in a magazine.
2012
[edit]Churchill became part of the new Direct Line Group in early 2012, which was created ahead of the planned divestment.
