Criterion 1 - well-written

[edit]

Overall, this is a very well-written article. I see only a few issues, most of which are very small but easily fixed. Many look to be just typos. Some I will try to fix myself.

  • In the lead, you mention that Smart "won several awards." I know that the rest of the article goes into more detail, but "several awards" seems too vague here. Could you make the phrase more specific?
  • Also in the lead, you refer to two of Smart's works as "widely known." I don't know that I'd go so far as to call anything Smart did "widely known" - perhaps you could rephrase as something like: "Smart's two most widely-known works are...."
  • Nit-picky: there's a space before the comma in "He was, according to his nephew , 'of a delicate constitution...'" in the "Biography" section.
  • At the end of "Early life," shouldn't "twelve year old girl" be hyphenated?
  • "By 1749, he was in love with her and wrote to his friend Charles Burney (father of Fanny Burney) 'I am situated'" needs a colon or something between Burney and the quotation.
  • "It is possible that Smart's winning of Cambridge's "Seatonian Prize" on 25 March 1750, that brought his poetic abilities to Newbery's" ... attention?
  • "Smart wrote in the ""poetical essay" tradition" - extra quotation marks here.
  • "There is little information known about how and why Smart was released from asylum" - seems a little wordy and awkward. "Little is known"?

I've made corrections to all of the above except for the first, which I removed (it mentions the Seatonian prize later, so I felt that it was redundant). As a side note, you may not have read his two big poems before, but you may recognize this section ("For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry"). It is heavily anthologized. I'm familiar with that piece, and with Smart in general; I just don't think that he's widely known. ~ As a side-note, my first name in real life is Anna, and for several years I had a screensaver full of quotations, one of which was from the Jubilate Agno: "Let Anna rejoice with the porpoise, who is a joyous fish and of good omen." Oh - I forgot to mention that I was unsure about the hyphen correction. What does the MoS say on hyphens in such situations? Ottava Rima (talk) 02:49, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't immediately see this in the MoS, but my understanding is that it should be "twelve-year-old" as all three words modify the subject. Ricardiana (talk) 03:08, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also seems fine, although I see there was some disagreement earlier about the freemasonry stuff. Ricardiana (talk) 03:15, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
