I will review this article. After looking it through over the next few days, comments should be up.
- I am currently drafting the review. Given how the article is currently 132k in size, this could take longer than other GA reviews I've done. Snuggums (talk / edits) 04:43, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
- @SNUGGUMS: I would be grateful if you could review this quicker. It has been over seven days. Thanks, Simon (talk) 05:59, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry for the delay, it's coming..... Snuggums (talk / edits) 06:00, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Here's the review.....
- Infobox
- It's worth specifying here that Xtina is divorced from Jordan Bratman
- I would include that Forbes estimated Xtina's net worth to be $60 million in January 2007
- Lead
- "Born in Staten Island, New York and raised in Rochester and Wexford, Pennsylvania, she appeared on the television series Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club in her early years. In 1999, Aguilera rose to prominence with her self-titled debut album, which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles 'Genie in a Bottle', 'What a Girl Wants', and 'Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)'."..... something doesn't seem right about the transition here. It might be worth removing the birth locations and hometowns, and using something like After starring on the television series Star Search and The Mickey Mouse Club in her childhood, Aguilera rose to prominence in 1999 with her self-titled debut album. After that, mention the charts and singles.
- Her signing with RCA Records needs to be mentioned
- "debuted atop the record charts of thirteen nations"..... some specific names would help
- "and yielded a Grammy Award"..... I would use won or earned
- The genres/influences of Stripped, Back to Basics, and Bionic are listed here, but not her other albums. Out of curiosity, is there any particular reason why they aren't included?
- "has earned her numerous awards and accolades"..... to avoid repetition, just use either "awards" or "accolades". I'm not sure about the use of "numerous".
- "To date, Aguilera has sold 50 million albums worldwide"..... per WP:RELTIME, a specific date range should be given. In this case, it would be April 2011 based on this reference used.
- Moves Like Jagger should be included
- Life and career
-
- 1980–98
- Early life and career beginnings
- From a glance into Mary Anne Donovan's biography and Xtina's TV Guide profile, I see that her stepfather is James (Jim) Kearns, and she has a half-brother named Michael (who was born in April 1996) through her mother's marriage to Jim. Their names are definitely worth including. Step-siblings Stephanie and Casey Kearns might also be worth adding.
- "is of Irish ancestry" → "has Irish ancestry"
- For the claims of Fausto being abusive, him denying it, and Xtina looking to reconnect, I would include quotes.
- "home in the Pittsburgh suburb of Rochester, Pennsylvania" → "home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania"
- The co-stars for The Mickey Mouse Club don't really need to be mentioned here
- For "Reflection" earning a Golden Globe nomination, I'd add that it lost to The Prayer (Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli song) (see this winners list)
- 1999–2000
- Christina Aguilera, Mi Reflejo, and My Kind of Christmas
- I'm not sure File:Genie in a Bottle (Christina Aguilera song - sample).ogg is really relevant for this section. Either way, it would help fill out the "n.a." fields of its FUR.
- "The album peaked at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart"..... Canadian charts are currently unsourced
- If possible, try to find a range for when she started dating Jorge Santos
- 2001–03
- Stripped"
- "reaching the top ten of several countries including Australia, Canada, and Spain"..... where's the sources for Canada and Spain?
- Just Be Free and its release date should be included
- I don't think it's really necessary to include hair dying, tattoos, piercings or "Miss Independent", and personally would instead talk about provocative performances.
- "The album was produced primarily by Scott Storch and singer-songwriter Linda Perry"..... source?
- "Released on October 25, 2002" needs to be source
- Detail on the "Dirrty" music video is better placed in the song's article rather than here
- "The second single, 'Beautiful', reached number two in the United States, and peaked atop the charts of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom"..... all these positions except for United States and Australia are unsourced
- "The album spawned the follow-up singles 'Fighter', 'Can't Hold Us Down', and 'The Voice Within' in 2003, all of which attained moderate success worldwide"..... this is WP:SYNTH without a source explicitly saying "moderate success". I would give a range for chart positions, along the lines of "____, ____, and ____ reached the Top _____ in ______"
- If mentioning that Xtina hosted the 2003 MTV Europe Music Awards, I'd add that she won the award for Best Female
- No commentary on the ever-so-controversial 2003 VMA performance with Madonna?
- 2004–09
- First marriage, Back to Basics, and first child
- It might be worth renaming this to "First marriage, Back to Basics, and motherhood" Aguilera has got two children
- "She embraced a more mature image"..... I understand what this is trying to say, but "mature" is POV
- Add that she voiced a Rastafarian jellyfish in Shark Tale when discussing her cover of "Car Wash"
- Include how and when she met Jordan Bratman N.A.
- I don't think the Grammy nomination for "A Song for You" is necessary to mention since she didn't win it. Instead, include the album it was contained on and the song/album release.
- Release date of album needs a source
- let's give names of some countries where Back to Basics debuted at #1
- "charted within the top three of several countries in Europe, including Hungary, Ireland, and the United Kingdom"..... each country needs a citation
- The Grammy win for "Ain't No Other Man" needs a source
- I don't think it's necessary to include the 2007 Grammy performance It was deemed as a highlight of the event
- "experienced success in countries across Europe and Oceania"..... source?
- Let's give time ranges for the releases of "Candyman", "Slow Down Baby", and "Oh Mother"
- It's worth including how much money the Back to Basics Tour made
- While Xtina's duet of "Steppin' Out with My Baby" with Tony Bennett being included on his 2012 album Viva Duets is worth mentioning later in the article, the 2007 Emmy performance isn't. Remove this bit.
- Her son Max should definitely be mentioned by name when talking about his birth.
- "It included Aguilera's previous singles and four new songs, two of which are remade versions of two previous singles"..... source?
- Chart debuts for Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits in Finland and France are missing sources Already included
- 2010–11
- Bionic, Burlesque, and The Voice
- "and having sold"..... has
- Bionic release date needs to be sourced
- "The lead single, 'Not Myself Tonight', charted at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100" is missing a source, and "experienced moderate success worldwide" seems like WP:SYNTH without a reference explicitly supporting it
- No critical commentary for the Burlesque film?
- For the Burlesque soundtrack, it's worth mentioning Express (Christina Aguilera song) and Show Me How You Burlesque by name among the songs Xtina recorded.
- Add that "Bound to You" lost its Golden Globe nomination Cher's You Haven't Seen the Last of Me from the Burlesque soundtrack
- I'm not sure the 2011 Grammy opening performance is necessary
- There needs to be a source for when "Move Like Jagger" was released
- 2012–13
- Lotus and return to The Voice
- "Its lead single, 'Your Body', debuted and peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was a moderate hit worldwide"..... again, all positions need sourcing, and "moderate hit worldwide" is WP:SYNTH unless a source specifically calls it that
- Include why Shakira replaced Xtina for the fourth season of The Voice
- The release date for "Feel This Moment" needs to be sourced
- There needs to be a source for the release of "
- 2014–present
- Second child and eighth studio album
- Since this section is somewhat short, it could (for now) be merged into the section for "Lotus and return to The Voice"
- Xtina's daughter Summer should be mentioned by name here.
- There should be a source for Gwen Stefani replacing Xtina for season 7 of The Voice
- Artistry
-
- Voice
- "On the other hand" doesn't really seem like appropriate tone
- While oversinging is a commonly used term, I question the POV of its use, especially without quotation marks
- Influences
- "also significantly influence Aguilera"..... awkward phrasing
- It doesn't really help to mention acting influences without quotes or elaboration
- Musical style and themes
- Nothing on the dance-pop of My Kind of Christmas?
- Burlesque was NOT her first feature film- that was Shark Tale
- Not sure if "For example" is the best phrasing
- "obscure" in "obscure collaborators" is POV
- Public Image
- If I'm going to be honest, I feel this belongs in its own section outside of "artistry"
- Hair dye and piercings aren't really needed here, though outfits that sparked controversy would be good to add
- No quotes on her weight?
- Marc Jacobs is unsourced
- I would add when the wax figure was added to the museum
- Legacy
- FN's 204 and 205 should come right after the period in "Aguilera has also been recognized as one of the greatest vocalists of all time" per MOS:REFPUNC
- Other ventures
-
- Philanthropy
- The first three paragraphs should be in a "politics" subsection
- Product and endorsements
- This is better titled "Product endorsements"
- "Following the birth of her son in 2008, she was reportedly paid $1.5 million by People for her baby pictures, which became the ninth most expensive celebrity baby photographs ever taken" is not exactly business-related and should be removed, even if she got paid for photos
- References
-
- Footnotes
- Here's what I've found from spotchecks.....
- FN6: Doesn't have any page numbers, and I can't find anything suggesting this article exists?
- FN7: Should read to KPSP-CD and read "CBS-Local"
- FN9: Needs a publication year and ISBN number
- FN's 14, 16, and 18: These have HARVref errors that needs to be fixed. To see the problem, you might need to install this script.
- FN17: This URL is for her songs, not her albums. See this for album positions.
- FN23: The URL just gives a blank screen with no information
- FN24: The source mentions Xtina having 3 No. 1's on Billboard, but doesn't support her being "one of few female artists to have three number-one singles from one album" on the chart
- FN26: The quote "Before her debut CD, Christina Aguilera, was released last year, Aguilera's record label, RCA, set up small concerts in hotels and nightclubs in New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto and Minneapolis. Accompanied only by a piano, Aguilera showed off her vocal talents to music critics and music-industry reps" doesn't support anything about "private" gigs or even give a time range
- FN34: Supports beginning range for tour, but not the ending
- FN38: Talks about how she didn't like her image at the time, but doesn't mention her manager or "bubblegum pop" at all
- FN40: Needs to be replaced since something about this link isn't right- how can a 1997 ref support her suing a manager she didn't even have at the time?
- FN41: Doesn't mention release date for song
- FN42: "Australian-charts.com" should read "Australian Charts" or ARIA Charts, and this can only be used for Australian chartings
- FN43: Same problem as FN41
- FN47: This also contains a HARVref error to be fixed
- FN49: Doesn't mention "lyrical depth", Steve Kurtz, or "bubblegum pop" at all
- FN51: Doesn't mention piercings
- FN54: Just links to the main Entertainment Weekly wesbite
- FN60: Should read The New York Times, not "Daily News"
- FN61: Doesn't mention The Stripped Tour
- FN65: I'm skeptical about Hello! magazine
- FN66: Only says the song for Mercedes is titled "Hello"
- FN70: Doesn't give a specific marriage date, please use a source that specifically mentions a certain date
- FN71: "The pair have been together for more than two years" doesn't necessarily equate to three years, so find a source that states more explicitly that they were together for three years before becoming engaged
- FN73: Doesn't contain the exact quote used, but does support Back to Basics having the elements listed. Just rephrase the text a bit to match the source.
- FN75: Needs date, and it would help to add the URL (which can be found here)
- FN84: I'm not sure if "Take 40 Australia" is a reliable source
- FN96: Can another source than iTunes be used for European release dates?
- FN99: To be honest, this isn't exactly a top-quality source
- FN104: This is as of September 2014, not August
- FN107: Needs to be replaced as it takes information from the unreliable TMZ
- FN108: Not really a reliable source
- FN109: "New York Daily News" should link to Daily News (New York)
- FN112: Doesn't explicitly say she "accidentally omitted a line"
- FN113: Not really reliable
- FN115: Links to a general Washington Times page rather than an article
- FN120: Doesn't mention any release date for Lotus or say that it became her overall least successful album. Author is also incorrectly listed as "Nick Levine".
- FN121: Says that Lotus sold "slightly less than 73,000 copies", not "73,408 units"
- FN127: Doesn't say that her duet of "Say Something" was a re-recording
- FN128: "http://www.riaa.com" should read "RIAA" or "Recording Industry Association of America"
- FN136: I understand how the "Does she mind that people invariably think "saucepot" before they think 'soprano'?" quote was used for her vocal range, but it's better to find a source that mentions it more explicitly
- FN138: Not really the best of sources
- FN147: Same as FN99
- FN149: Doesn't contain any quotes from Linda Perry
- FN's 153 and 154: These don't mention Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday, and none of the people are described as having "significant influence"
- FN155: Author is Anna Pollitt, and "credited Houston's influence" (quote from link) is not the same as "major influence"
- FN156: Is "10" the page number? If so, make this explicit.
- FN157: Fix the HARVref error
- FN162: The quote "She is an icon and she inspired me through some of my career" doesn't explicitly indicate Cher inspires Xtina's acting
- FN167: New York Post is not a reliable source
- FN168: Doesn't describe Stripped as a "breakthrough"
- FN170: Says nothing about Back to Basics
- FN171: Doesn't include spirituality, motherhood, or grief
- FN172: Doesn't support her saying that men don't own women's sexualities
- FN173: Says nothing about double standards or promiscuity
- FN178: Doesn't mention "Xtina" alter ego
- FN185: Title is "Oops!... I Did It Again Review", and author David Browne needs to be included
- FN's 187 and 188: Same URL, should be combined into a singular reference, and URL isn't displaying much text
- FN197: Dead link
- FN205: Same as FN108
- FN206: Same as FN's 99 and 147
- FN's 225 and 229: Should just read E!
- FN232: Doesn't support the "inspire young people across the country" quote
- FN233: Same as FN167
- FN235: The quote "working a lot with a domestic-violence and child-abuse shelter in Pittsburgh" doesn't explicitly indicate that the shelter is the Women's Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh
- FN237: Says nothing about Human Rights Campaign or Love Rocks
- FN249: Doesn't mention anything about donations going to Oxfam America, Partners In Health, Red Cross, or UNICEF
- FN254: Same as FN146
- FN262: Same as FN65
- FN270: Remove the "| NME News" bit
- FN's 277 and 279: Not that Amazon.com is bad, but I feel something other than that should be used here
- FN278: Same as FN's 146 and 254
- Sources
- These three book references each contain HARVref errors.
- Overall
- Well-written?
- Prose quality: Not the worst, but could be better
- Manual of Style: Close, but needs improving
- Verifiable?
- Reference layout: Needs some work, particularly for the HARVref errors
- Reliable sources: Some sources are subpar
- No original research: Many statements are missing citations and/or are not supported by attributed sources, and the HARVref errors make some things harder to verify
- Broad in coverage?
- Major aspects: Almost, though some parts need elaboration
- Focused: There are bits I feel aren't fully beneficial
- Neutral?: Mostly, but I've got nitpicks
- Stable?: Nothing of major concern
- Illustrated, if possible, by images?
- Appropriate licensing: One incomplete FUR
- Relevance and captioning: One questionable use of an audio sample
- Pass or Fail?: With the current amount of unsourced content and synthesis, this nomination is being failed. I applaud the efforts made to bring this up to GA-standard, but am sorry to say that there's simply too many problems for me to place it on hold. On the plus side, this article Keeps Gettin' Better (forgive the pun) and has definitely improved since its previous GAN. Before renominating, make sure ALL CONTENT IS SUPPORTED by given sources, and perhaps put this article up for peer review. I personally recommend waiting until her new album has been released and the article has stabilized before renominating for GA. Better luck next time!
