[edit]- I changed the reference under Christian Roots from Philip the Apostle to Philip the Evangelist. If you read Acts closely, you'll see that the Philip discussed in Chapter 8 is actually Philip the Evangelist, one of the 7 men "chosen to serve tables" listed in Acts 6:5, rather than Philip the Apostle. This can be determined from Acts 8:1, where it says "and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles. [King James Version]" This would exclude Philip the Apostle from going to Samaria, yet Philip (one of "the seven") went to Samaria in the early verses of Acts 8. Acts 8:40 states that Philip came to Caesarea, and we find that the only other reference to this Philip is in Acts 21:8, where he is still at Caesarea, and is referred to as "Philip the Evangelist," in order to distinguish him from "Philip the Apostle." This agrees with the content of the Wikipedia article for Philip the Evangelist.
