Premium Beef of Nebraska

[edit]

Come on, can't we label it as MeatGate? NiftyDude 13:04, 31 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I ran a google search (MeatGate "Premium Beef"); there are only two hits. One is wikipedia; the other is a Democratic blog citing wikipedia.
So, if you want my personal opinion, wikipedia editors shouldn't be in the business of coining words, no matter how tempting - just too subjective. Sorry. (If the term, now that it's loose, does spread, then of course it's fair game for being cited in the article, but that isn't the situation at the moment.) Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

[edit]

The entry for this organization keeps getting sanitized by a CREW staffer. It is clearly a left-leaning organization. Progressivism would be a euphemism in this case. --TrustTruth 15:59, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Who is the CREW staffer? Please assume good faith. As for my edit, I saw you'd inserted that CRE was a "left-leaning political action committee". A political actoin committee is a very specific thing, and CREW isn't one. I looked up what they called themselves and they call themselves "progressive". When you changed it back to "left-leaning" again, I Googled that usage and found it has been called that too. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 20:23, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Beyond the fact that CREW self-identifies as a "progressive" group and not as a "left-leaning" group, I'm surprised that the term "left-leaning" would be used at all. Does anyone describe conservative groups as "right-leaning"? No, they are described as "conservative". I don't see why wikipedia would support a double standard whereby conservative groups are described as "conservative", but progressive groups are described as "left-leaning". It's frankly absurd. Ortcutt 21:08, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Someone at that article's talk page identified the editor as a staffer. I admit it's possible they were wrong. For the record, I am not a Republican, and I am no fan of Joe Cannon. I don't live in Utah and I have no connection to the man. That's not why I made the edit. I just haven't personally heard the "progressive" term until the last year or two, so it came across to me as a euphemism for liberal (not that liberal is a bad word per se). After looking the term up, apparently it's not that new. You learn something every day. Maybe a better term would be "liberal". --TrustTruth 23:10, 18 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ortcutt, I apologize. I did not realize that left-leaning would come across as insulting. How about the compromise I proposed above? I will change the term to "liberal". --TrustTruth 01:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It is actually a nonpartisan group, as stated on its own website. It routinely blows the whistle on Democrats as well as Republicans. This should quell any fears that the group is anything other than nonpartisan. Rangergordon (talk) 06:01, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Attempted Obama smear

[edit]

According to The Times of London, Cannon was involved in an attempt to suggest that Barack Obama's acclaimed memoir Dreams from My Father was actually written by William Ayers. I don't know whether Cannon's involvement in this is significant enough to merit inclusion in a BLP (though it's worth noting that The Times is Britain's newspaper of record). Regular editors here can figure out what to do with this. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 04:07, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I found a bit more on this from the Salt Lake Tribune. Have at it, but remember WP:BLP (which this article may have issues with already). —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 04:15, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
