Date of Birth?
[edit]There is some dispute about Coleman's birthdate. Official baseball records have it as August 25, 1937, but in his obituary in The Times and Democrat (Orangeburg, South Carolina)[1], his niece said that Coleman was actually born on August 18, 1935.

- @Mad Thinker, Yankees10, Go Phightins!, Spanneraol, and Buster7: Thanks for the input, MT. In the past I have corresponded with baseball-reference.com concerning conflicting dates of birth between them and mlb.com. B-r also uses census reports to back up their DOBs. I have also found that obituaries may not always have accurate information although in this case, the niece is stating one thing and the obituary (not necessarily) the niece is quoting b-r.com. In my opinion, take a deep breath, wait, and see if b-r.com and/or mlb.com make any changes in the next couple of weeks. I'm open to other opinions. Bob305 (talk) 23:06, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Tricky one here (sorry for the delayed reply). I'm inclined to agree with Bob ... obituaries are probably not the best source. Go Phightins! 16:20, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
- After a "cooling off" period of almost 4 weeks ... baseball-reference.com is now listing his DOB as August 25, 1935 (2 years earlier, but not the exact date as listed in the obituary); mlb.com is still listing the DOB as August 25, 1937. I'll update the hidden note in the article. Bob305 (talk) 18:55, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

DOB
[edit]Guys I understand that you have used the date of birth on MLB.com but majority of other sources - Baseball Reference, SABR, Retrosheet, and obituaries - lists it as 1935. I think we should go with the majority consensus rather than what is appears to be a mistake by MLB's website. But I'd like to get some feedback first. -- Omnis Scientia (talk) 13:59, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
