Chumley
[edit]Why is it pronounced "chumley"? That omits two syllables. It should be pronounced "chall-mon-dell-E"
Featherstonehaugh
[edit]Surely Featherstonehaugh has more silent letters
It seems like a silly measurement to include in an article unless there are notable instances of this being referenced elsewhere. The number of "pronounced letters" is at least similar for the two names. Furthermore isn't this a proper name, so there have to be many competitors, especially from Wales?
Anyway, to play the game, how do you compare the names:
English | IPA | Phonetic |
---|---|---|
Featherstonehaugh (18) | /ˈfænʃɔ:/ (6) | (“fanshaw”) |
Cholmondeley (12) | /ˈtʃʌmli/ (6) | (“chumly”) |
or maybe
FeAthrStoneHAUgh(18) FANSHAU?(7)
CHOlMondeLeY(12) CHOMLY?(6)
They both seem to turn what looks like four syllables into two, and even have similar types of sounds:
f - l
a - y
n - m
sh - ch
aw - u
