BC as source of Chinese jade

[edit]

Not sure if it belongs in this article, but one of the main mineral exports from British Columbia to China, ever since the Fraser Gold Rush, has been nephrite jade, in quantity. There's histories of this out there somewhere; all of it's dark green nephrite, with some apple-green cores; much later Qing-era art is made from it. Supposedly there's older-still pieces which are mineralogical identical, suggesting tribe-to-tribe trading between parts of BC in which it occurs to China, long before "discovery" of BC in the late 1700s. Don't have any specifics to add for now, other than it took a few years for BC mining commissioners to clue into the nature of the "big black rocks" that Chinese entrepreneurs were shipping to the coast for export.....and that in the modern era most jade mined at Jade City in the Cassia r District was exported to China. ` Skookum1 (talk) 19:05, 26 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

names section

[edit]

The names section seems unclear, and it is very similar to a paragraph in the jade article. Some questions I have: 1. What does the expression "'true' jade" mean? Does it include stones other than jadeite and nephrite?

2. How is the cultural concept of jade broader in China and Korea than in the West? Is it because 玉 refers to stones other than jade? Are there any examples?

3. The sentence "The Chinese names for many ornamental non-jade rocks also incorporate this character as a radical, and it is widely understood by native speakers that such stones are not, in fact, true precious nephrite or jadeite" seems obvious. Why would you expect that when 玉 is used as a radical that the character should mean jade?

4. What are some examples of stones that are not jade but are translated into English as "jade" for commercial reasons?

Can someone with knowledge in this area help clarify this section? Wakablogger2 (talk) 20:47, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:ERA

[edit]

Per WP:ERA, this edit established the usage of the page as BC/AD. Kindly maintain it consistently, pending a new consensus. As an unrelated personal request, please do not just give blanket specifc dates to the dynasties. Their births and deaths were complex affairs and the usages discussed on this page did not start and stop on those dates. It's far more accurate to use vaguer terms (e.g., "the Han Dynasty (2nd century BC - 2nd century AD)"), unless you have sources for specific jade-related dates. (A made-up example would be something like: "No bi has been found dating earlier than 1000 BC") — LlywelynII 10:17, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
