Flag?
[edit]Does Chiloë have a flag of its own? //Big Adamsky 11:37, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
No
Marajó
[edit]Second largest island of South America? What about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marajo?
No... the article says 'the second largest island in Chile'.
Fauna y Flora
[edit]What animals and plants are there? Hay endemismos? Estaría bien incluir una seccion en el articulo. Anselmocisneros 03:42, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- No. The species that inhabits Chiloe are the same that in mainland. There is a endemical bird, "huilco" (also known by Chileans as diucón de Chiloé) and in western coast of Isla Grande remain near 500 Darwin's Foxes (zorros chilotes in Spanish) but that animal also lives in Nahuelbuta (maybe 50 individuals). You can read es:Chiloé#Flora_y_fauna. Bye. --Lin linao 04:46, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Merge Chiloé Island and Chiloé Province
[edit]Dont you think that Chiloé Island should be merged with Chiloé Province? Both article are abouth the same thing. For example Castro, Chile and many other chilean cities have only one article for both the city/town and the commune.Dentren | Talk 14:01, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Nope, I think that the proper name for article is Chiloé Archipelago (or the correct word for "a group of islands"). Chiloé Province only should talk about administrative territory with that name: Chiloé+Llanquihue+Palena+Aysén+Magallanes -> the same-Magallanes -> -Aysén -> - + -Llanquihue ->-Palena, etc. Bye. Lin linao 15:52, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- All three of them talk about different things: Chiloé Province = political, Chiloé Archipelago = geographical and Chiloé Island about that one island. This shouldn't be merged. Yamanbaiia 23:47, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Two against one, it seems that we've reached consensus. I'll remove the tag. -Yamanbaiia (talk) 19:39, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Italic text== Chiloé is no one island's name ==
JetDriver (talk) 01:11, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
I must disagree with the title of this article. There is no island called Chiloé; this is the name of an archipelago whose main and biggest island is called Isla Grande (Big Island). This is as wrong as saying that Galapagos, Falklands, Juan Fernández, etc. are names of any island, they are not, they are archipelagos. We should not call "Chiloé Island" the one whose real name is "Isla Grande" in the same way we cannot call "Galapagos Island" the island of "Isabela" (the main one in the archipelago). Wikipedia in spanish has it almost right; and I say almost because they call it all the time "Isla Grande de Chiloé", when "de Chiloé" is not part of the name, it's only a reference to its location. Take a look.
In my opinion, a better title would be something like: "Isla Grande, Chiloé" or "Isla Grande (Chiloé)".
The official site of the municipal government of the Comuna de Castro (http://www.municastro.cl/Cultura.asp?Seccion=cultura_resena_historica.htm) says:
"Su localización en el centro mismo de la Isla Grande, como ciudad base, permite el fácil traslado a otras localidades."
The official site of the provincial government of Chiloé (Gobernación Provincial de Chiloé) (http://www.chiloe.cl/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=48) says:
"...Está situada entre los 41º46 y 46º59 Lat Sur, y los 72º30 y 75º26 Lon Oeste. La Isla Grande es la continuación de la Cordillera de la costa..."
"... Las Islas e Islotes, situados entre la Isla Grande y el Continente..."
"...que habitaban algunas comarcas del sur de la Isla Grande y las islas adyacentes..."
"...Se dieron cuenta que los HUILLICHES de la Isla Grande vivían en plena ociosidad..."
etc, etc.
The same can be seen in any official map of Chile.
¿What do you think?
- Chiloé is the name of the archipelago and the name of main island. Their "complete" name is Isla Grande de Chiloé, but also is called Isla de Chiloé o simply Chiloé. In Spanish de ("of") is a normal form to conect isla con their name: "la isla de Cuba", "la isla de Quinchao". Moreover, people speaks about Chiloé y las islas adyacentes ("Chiloe and neighbouring islands"). However, this article should be renamed to Chiloé Archipelago because their theme is all the islands, not only Chiloé ;). Bye. Lin linao (talk) 06:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- The article should bee move to Chiloé be about the whole archipelago and the province of Chiloé that consist of just all the territories of archipelago. Chilote Spanish, Chilota mythology and Chilota architecture should also be merged into the article until there they have enought information to be independent articles. Dentren | Talk 15:56, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
To further support my argument, here I quote what Wikipedia in spanish says in the article about the city of Castro: "La comuna está formada por una estrecha franja de tierra en la Isla Grande, entre las comunas de Dalcahue y Chonchi, y por dos islas menores." http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castro_%28Chile%29.
Additionally, I yesterday consulted with several people, all of them inhabitants of Chiloé or the Región de los Lagos –including Ms. Van Meurs, director of the Museum of Ancud– and everyone said that they always call the island Isla Grande or Isla Grande de Chiloé, never Isla de Chiloé.
I know it is a common error to call it Isla de Chiloé, even here in Chile, but we want Wikipedia to be most accurate . JetDriver (talk) 15:12, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- When an "error" is naming places or objects becomes a "common error", is not an error. Isla de Chiloé is a proper name for that island and Wikipedia it is not a source for Wikipedia. (I guess that "La comuna está formada por una estrecha franja de tierra en la Isla Grande, entre las comunas de Dalcahue y Chonchi, y por dos islas menores." was written by myself for estilistic purposes and is not a proof for nothing). Bye. 200.2.112.181 (talk) 20:58, 14 December 2007 (UTC) PS: I'm sorry, I'm User:Lin linao logged out (writing from job...)
- Proper nouns may vary, they are not always an exact translation of the original proper noun. Example: the French Riviera's orginal name is Côte d'Azur, but in spanish it's called Costa Azul, when "Azur" does not mean "Azul". Another proof that "Chiloé Island" is the right name in English is a quick google search, "big island of Chiloé" = 820 results (many of them mirrors of same thing) while "Chiloé island" = +66000. -Yamanbaiia (talk) 21:47, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
