Reporting Relationship

I think the notion that CIO's generally report to the CFO is dated. I think a more accurate description is that if a CIO does not report to the CEO - they typically report to another "C" level position for example I know plenty of CIO's who report to COO's, CFO's even division Presidents. I'll let this sit here for a while and then perhaps edit the page. Thoughts anyone?

No offense to my CFO colleagues, but I think that is a bit of a dated stereotype.

xQx (logged in as anonymous): I agree totally. I'm changing the text. An IT Manager in a company that neglects it's IT department reports to the CFO. No self respecting CIO who is worthy of the title reports to "head bean counter" any more. I could not agree more. As a CIO I report the CEO. I am offended that a Chief would report to CFO or COO. The CIO today is so much more than an upgraded IT or MIS Director as intimated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.162.101.49 (talk) 12:35, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

I updated the article today with data from the last available CIO survey (2008) which shows that 41% of CIOs report to the CEO and 23% report to the CFO. Also no offence, but the CIO is usually internal, and the CTO is external. So therefore it makes a lot more sense if the CIO reports to the CFO, and not to the CEO. It's the CTO who always reports to the CEO (CEO = sales, you know that?). However, many of so called "CIO's" may be rather CTO's, therefore they correctly report to the CEO. Why? Because many people don't know the difference between CTO and CIO, so there are many CTO's who wrongly call themselves "CIO". Cheers --178.197.226.15 (talk) 14:26, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

What makes sense for you is an opinion (by you) and it is not a fact -- I know companies that has both a CIO and a CTO role -- in this particular company the CTO reports to the CIO who reports to the CEO 99.103.198.118 (talk) 23:34, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
