Feedback for Colonial Latin America Class
[edit]Nice additions! I think the regional information and clarification on the myth versus the actual person are definitely important additions! Did or will you add external links? I think that would be helpful! Emilyelizabeth20 (talk) 00:16, 28 October 2017 (UTC)
The Myth and the myth
[edit]Although I would agree this article is certainly of "fair" quality, and can be supported in part by published sources, the article and probably the sources it relies on appears significantly influenced by the Gilberto Freyre, The Masters and the Slaves school of thought. Moreover, the further one reads in the essay the less documentation is cited and the essay becomes more "mythical". For example, near the end of the essay the following statement shows almost complete misunderstanding of some basics: "Whereas Anglo-Saxon slave holders forced their own race-mixed offspring into slavery and sold them to other masters as well, making a profit from them, Luso-Brazilians generally freed their own mixed-race children and often granted them nobility titles." Portuguese nobility consisted of persons born to noble families and nobreza da minha casa (persons raised to nobility by the king). Yes, rarely, some persons of mixed race were raised to nobility, but only the king made such grants and by no means were these grants made "often." P2dwight (talk) 17:44, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
