When pop culture goes into law (only in Hungary)
If anyone would have doubts about the problems Hungary possesses, here's a quote from a law (in its general justification/reasoning) the government issued in 2016 about the decree to force shops to close on Sundays:
“ | Since there could be a Popular Vote regarding the compulsory shop close on sundays, it is important to consider, what kind of historical context we have for this Vote. The most important thing for the Government today is the unified defense against the forced settling of Brussels. It is the purpose of many to hinder the united national defense against the forced settling. To allow this would be irresponsibility. | ” |
To understand the context: the Hungarian government party Fidesz keeps an EU-hostile populist propaganda for all times, and "Brussels" is the personification of the EU; it has no relation whatsoever to the christianity-based demand of the petty party KDNP about their personal values forcing down the throat of the country (which has been abolished since, by the way).
This is probably uniquely the only case of Chewbacca defense used in a national law. (And let us hope it stays that way.) --grin ✎ 07:57, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Endor
I just think it should be mentioned that in the Star Wars universe Chewbacca actually does not live on Endor at all, i'm not sure what made the South Park writers think that.
- That was a joke son. --Damian Yerrick (☎) 02:49, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- before south parks took on the chewbacca defense there were already claims that chewbacca was from endor but it was too expensive so they filled it with ewocks instead. Yeah its common knowledge now that chewbacca was from kashyyk or however you spell it, but not a good 20+ years ago. What would be nice is to know where these claims come from. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.255.93.199 (talk) 22:56, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
Understood.
--Johnston49er 06:30, 24 September 2006 (UTC) Actually in the Star Wars Christmas Special Chewbacca is shown living on Endor with a family so he does live on Endor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.86.85.229 (talk) 17:49, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Negative. The Star Wars Holiday Special takes place on Kashyyyk, though it does look very similar to Endor. 174.50.6.100 (talk) 05:18, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
It's worth pointing out originally RotJ was going to have the Wookiees overthrow the empire, Lucas changed that owing to Chewbacca being proficient with technology which disrupted his original idea of a primitive culture doing so. It's referenced in the Episode VI commentary in the 2004 rerelease and Empire of Dreams. 122.149.151.92 (talk) 09:23, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
"It doesn't fit..." not accurate?
From my understanding of the linked article (OJ Simpson trial), the quote "If it doesn't fit..." refers to a glove, not a knit cap. Can someone else sanity check this before I edit? Trumblej1986 (talk) 19:14, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
- Yep, goferit, you’re right. (There’s plenty of confirmation in the refs and links for the O. J. Simpson and related articles: unsurprising, to me, as that’s how I remember it, clearly, from the time.)
Is this legitimate ?
Is this a legitimate article? Nothing links to it except the Wikipedia:Sandbox. I uderstand that this was an act in South Park, but is this term useful? All of the Google hits seem to be referring to or spoofing this South Park joke. If it is legitimate, shouldn't the lengthy quotes be cut down? -- Paige 16:24, 29 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- I agree. If it is legitimate, I'd like to see a better introduction than just "The Chewbacca Defense is a nonsensical legal defence" -Fernkes 17:43, Sep 29, 2003 (UTC)
- Perhaps something like what was done with the Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead article from SNL? -- Paige 18:27, 29 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- Yes, that gives the reader a bit of history and gets him/her acquainted with what's going on. As it is now, I'm in the dark. - Fernkes 21:46, Sep 29, 2003 (UTC)
- I first encountered the term "Chewbacca Defense" in an online debate re: Alan Derhowitz. I was very puzzled. The author seemed to think that everyone would understand what he meant. After a lot of searching, I found what it did mean. I thought, "why not put this on wikipedia?"

- The wikipedia connects to more than itself. It connects to the outside world. My description is short but accurate. Einstein said that "Everything should be made as simple as possible but no simpler."
- I believe the article should stay. Add to it if you must. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.8.131.154 (talk • contribs) 22:21, 29 September 2003 (UTC)
I've tried my best to make this a little bit more encyclopedic. I wonder if this might be considered source text, but quotations (even lengthy ones) are often quite useful. Evercat 23:40, 29 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- Well, now that it's been explained a bit more clearly, and one of the quotes dropped, I can see where this is legitimate. (And I now regret not having added "First post!" to my original comments above.) :oP Paige 02:29, 30 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- Ditto! -Fernkes 12:06, Sep 30, 2003 (UTC)
Inaccuracy
Sorry im a newb i dont know how to make a seperate section so i would appreciate it if someone edited this for me. I think this page is inaccurate, it WAS mentioned in books that the wookie home world was kashyyk, i have proof in a book made in 2002 called Star Wars Role PLaying Book REvised Edition. YEah someone should fix that. Yes i realize that this episdoe of South park came out in 1998, but my book said it used other star wars books as references — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnston49er (talk • contribs) 08:55, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
