Move to another name?

[edit]

@Frongicide:@Ghostofakina:, I've pinged you two since you two seem to be rather active on this topic, as we've seen with the deep dive by General Motors, the engine isn't even considered a "sixth-gen", despite the bore spacing. Now this leaves us in a silly predicament, what should we rename this page to? If we move it, I would also like to think we nominate this current page for speedy deletion, as it technically doesn't exist & don't want to lead anyone on any false trails. Appreciate your thoughts. @Obama gaming: I'm not super familliar with the inner workings of page renaming, but ideally IMHO the best would be to rename this page to "General Motors Gemini Engine". The fact that it is not even part of the main SBC engine family makes it even more deservig of its dedicated page - Especially if the rumors are true and the upcoming C8 ZR1 is to have a twin turbo version of this engine Frongicide (talk) 03:11, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Obama gaming: I was thinking of "General Motors flat-plane V8", as looking up "GM Gemini engine" seems to mainly show results for the Isuzu Gemini/Holden Gemini.Ghostofakina (talk) 03:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Frongicide:@Ghostofakina: Hmmm, do you two think something like "Chevrolet flat-plane V8"? As Frongicide mentioned, if the Zora/ZR1 rumours are to be believed, then it would be another iteration of this Gemini engine with forced induction & a hybrid setup. Obama gaming (talk) 08:06, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The thing is that Chevrolet has already made a completely unrelated V8 in the form of their IndyCar V8 engine, so calling this page that could lead to confusion. An if they their ever makes another flat plane V8 platform, we'll have another problem on our hands (unlikely but still). How about "General Motors LT6 engine" ? Or "Chevrolet LT6 based small block engine" to future proof it for the ZR1 ?Frongicide (talk) 15:07, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Frongicide:@Ghostofakina:@Obama gaming: Why "LT6-based"? LT6 is just the name of the initial iteration of this engine. I would say Chevrolet Gemini V8 engine or somesuch is less confusing and also less likely to need changing later. Or how about Chevrolet flat-plane small-block engine? "LT6-based" makes it sound like this engine was derived from some other engine called the LT6. I am not worried about people confusing this for the Isuzu Gemini, as long as there is a reference for Chevrolet referring to it as such we should be good to go. Anyhow, I am here because I took a picture of one of these and I was trying to figure out how to catalogue it in the Commons.  Mr.choppers | ✎  02:49, 17 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I put "LT6 based small block engine" to stay coherent with the "LS based Small block Engine", wich also encompasses a large amount of engines. The idea was to future proof it because the LT7 appears on the way. I used "LT6" intsead of just "LT" since there are multiple unrelated engines already using the LT prefix - including the one in the base C8 Corvette. As of now, it is not clear if Gemini will be used for the whole family or just the LT6. The LT7 might get a different nickname or no nickname at all. Also the Isusu Gemini was sold as the Chevrolet Gemini in some markets so there is definitely a risk of confusion there. And, as I have said in my previous comment, there was already an unrelated Chevrolet flat-plane small-block for indycar so that name is unsuitable for this engine.Frongicide (talk) 03:50, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've changed my username from Obama gaming by the way, and Frongicide has neatly summarised everything. Excellent image by the way, it's really high quality! X-750 Rust In Peace... Polaris 10:03, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks X-750, I was unexpectedly allowed to bring my tripod into NYIAS. Chevrolet Gemini is not the same title as Chevrolet Gemini small-block engine and I don't think there is any risk of confusion. Redirects work really well. "LT6-based" is just very illogical - the engine is called LT6, not based on it. (I also think that the LS page should be restored to its original title General Motors LS engine but that's another story and not a hill I am willing to die on.) Anyhow, according to this source, the engine was developed by the Project Gemini Team, it has a bunch of Gemini rocket illustrations on the internals, and "the team would prefer the LT6 be referred to as the small block Gemini." Autoweek says "Dubbed Gemini, this 5.5-liter dual-overhead-camshaft, naturally aspirated V8 makes enough power to..." Best,  Mr.choppers | ✎  02:29, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is well and good but again, we do no know if Gemini will be used for the whole family or just the LT6. The LT7 might get a different nickname or no nickname at all. If the intent is to future proof it, this name is a bad choice.
Furthermore, for titles wikipedia policy is to use Commonly recognisable names, and most of the current sources use LT6 either exlusively or predominientlty. As such, LT6 is probably the most recognizable name for the engine and should be the basis of the title. WP is also to stay coherent between articles and despite what your opinion on the title is, LS based small block engine is still named as such. (I disagree on reverting this article name because LS based engine also include LM, LQ and most LT engines, and it makes no sense to exclude them from the title. Anyways) You will also see that creator intent is not something that is considered in title conventions. Frongicide (talk) 17:25, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. As you have all noticed, I moved the page recently. My reasoning was that Gemini is easily distinguishable, rather than LT6 which sounds too similar to the fifth-generation "LT" engines. Ghostofakina (talk) 02:00, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
