Groupism i.e., Caste origin
[edit]The origin of groupism i.e., caste seems to have started with people trying to refer to themselves as one group. There was no divisions and sub divisions until different people started competing for the same resources and had to organize themselves into groups to improve their chances in competing.

Subdivision origin
[edit]Another reason for groupism came from the profession followed by the differnt groups. As people changed professions, they also had to change names to reflect those professions. However they needed to differentiate themselves from people who were already using those professional names. So as people took up farming they had to call themselves Vellala. However since other groups were using Vellala as title, different groups with additional names were created. Thus were created the various groups of Vellala.

New article
[edit]I have removed most of the content of this article to Nagarathar because Chettiar is a title not a caste. RaveenS 22:33, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Links
[edit]We seem to have a lot of links here. Are all these external links really necessary or are many of them spam? Poweroid 18:47, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
The link KOMATI leads to the South African river Komati while its relevance on the page it exists upon is ignored i.e., Komati as a community in Andhra Pradesh. This needs to be relinked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mkopparam (talk • contribs) 12:20, 13 December 2011 (UTC)
Malayali chettiar ?
[edit]there is no native chettiars or shettys in Kerala.Shetty's are those in kasaragode taluka bunts.also shetty is found among konkani's in kerala.there are many non-native people who identifies as malayalis that include tamil Iyyers(brahmins),Vellalars,Veerashaiva's,reddiar, nadar(trivendrum) etc. Pure Malayali's are Namboodiri's(malayali brahmins),Nairs(samantha's),Syrian Christians(st.thomas converts of a mix of namboodiri's,jews of persia etc who follows syriac tradition),Chowwan's(Ezhavans,Thiyyans etc).Chowwans are Schedule castes.while the other 3 are forward castes.apart from syrian christians which are majority Chrisitans in kerala, there are also [i]Latin[/i] Christians who are converted by Portugese and followers of St.Francis Xavier.Latin Christians are found in coastal areas and are SC.they are more related to Goan Christians.
then there are native tribes of ST called Parayans,Pelayans(pulayans) too.apart from these castes all others are outsiders who had embrassed Malayali culture especially Iyers and Konkanis(GSB) I think edit the chetty thing linking with malayali's 59.93.34.158 20:18, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Added founders of Lakshmi Vilas Bank and Karur Vysya Bank
[edit]The references are also given in the Bank Websites and also their Wikipedia pages and it clearly mentions the founders to be Chettiars. The article mentioned it a few years back but believe vandals have removed this time and again. Request Wiki editors to keep this intact. If you wish to remove please discuss it in the talk page.

Varna status
[edit]Varna status of Chettiars like most Dravidian non Brahmin castes was Shudra. Although they contested it and desired to be known as Vaishyas. The references have been provided for the same and meet the Wikipedia criteria for good sources. Colonial era sources have been removed. It is necessary to provide a neutral point of view in a caste page. I request User:Sharkslayer87 to kindly not remove the sourced content. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:204:548E:65CF:60B8:9568:3EAC:C56E (talk) 08:22, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
