Oldest chocolate bar
[edit]Article claims that this is Australia's oldest chocolate bar, but Wikipedia article on Violet Crumble states that originated in 1913... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kmm1965 (talk • contribs) 00:30, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
- This question was raised again on IRC #wikipedia-en-help.
- References differ on earliest dates for Violet Crumble, but documentary evidence places it at least as early as 1921 - https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/violet-crumble/ - but the same source also echoes the "oldest" claim for Cherry Ripe - https://australianfoodtimeline.com.au/cherry-ripe-bar/
- Or is there some distinction between "chocolate bar" and "candy bar coated with chocolate" that excludes Violet Crumble? — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 09:46, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Name?
[edit]Can anyone find out if Cherry Ripe is a more popular search item than the poem? If so, can we change the article to "Cherry Ripe" and the song to "Cherry Ripe (song)".
However, if the song is more popular, can we at least change this article to "Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar)" as various other bars eg: Chomp or Double Decker use it already and don't use "(candy bar)". AnimatedZebra (talk) 08:51, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- I just realised that (chocolate) and (chocolate bar) are both being used by various confectionery articles... I think we need a standard. AnimatedZebra (talk) 18:23, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Various other Cadbury chocolates are also using "Cadbury" in their article titles. So, we have a choice of either... Cherry Ripe, Cadbury Cherry Ripe, Cherry Ripe (chocolate) or Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar)... *sigh*. AnimatedZebra (talk) 18:52, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
Move?

The result of the move request was: page moved to Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar) by Bidgee. Rennell435 (talk) 14:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Cherry Ripe (candy bar) → Cherry Ripe –
- Can someone please verify that Cherry Ripe is indeed a more popular searched for item than the song, which is currently at the name I would like to move to. However, if the song turns out to be more popular, then can we at least change it to Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar) to keep it inline with other chocolate bars... eg. Chomp, Double Decker etc. AnimatedZebra (talk) 09:20, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Needs more evidence, and thus a full RM discussion. Powers T 13:00, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. Very famous song against chocolate bar that may be well-known in Australia but is virtually unheard of outside. Sorry, but no contest. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:13, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
- Comment - You could make the case that there is no primary topic and have the song moved to Cherry Ripe (song) accessible via a disambiguation page. Page view: Candy: 963, Song: 1957. I would support that. Marcus Qwertyus 01:21, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- As an Australian, I saw this RM and thought that the chocolate bar would clearly be the primary topic. However, some google searching leads be to believe that it is not the primary topic (though, in line with Marcus's comments, I'm not sure if there is one). In any case, I support the article being moved to Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar) as "candy bar" is an American term that is hardly ever used in Australia. Jenks24 (talk) 17:32, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
- Move to Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar), per the relevant style guide. Rennell435 (talk) 02:28, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
- Move to Cherry Ripe (chocolate bar), per the arguments above. I'd argue that there is no primary topic for Cherry Ripe. The song is not as famous today as it may have been in the past and these two are not the only Cherry Ripes at Wikipedia. The existence of Cherry Ripe (numbers station) justifies use of Cherry Ripe as a disambiguation page, so this article should not be moved there in any case. However, it should be mentioned that Cherry Ripe was originally about the chocolate bar until, with this edit it started changing focus to the song. --AussieLegend (talk) 06:26, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
- Support article move to chocolate bar (which already seems to have taken place) - it would appear that the chocolate bar is far and above the primary usage in Australia, but internationally the song is more known, so it's a case of two rival primary topics. Orderinchaos 09:26, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
