Data on CILIP Membership Numbers
[edit]I think this page would benefit from inclusion of CILIP membership numbers since CILIP was established. I appreciate that changes in membership numbers may be subject to various interpretations. However as this is meant to be a factual encyclopedic entry, I would suggest that little or no interpretations of the figures are provided.
In order to ensure that membership numbers over the time period are comparable it is desirable that the same (authoritative) sources of information are used. However if this is no possible other sources may need to be used. In any case it is desirable that information is provided on the sources - and even better if links to the sources are provided (if the information is available online).
Note that if membership numbers are available from printed information, details of the source should be provided (e.g. "information from paper sent to CILIP members in 2003").
I therefore suggest something along the following lines.
Membership Numbers
[edit]The following information on CILIP Membership numbers is taken from CILIP Council reports [1], with the exceptions of the estimates for 2002, 2003 and 2005. Membership numbers for 2004 and 2006 are not available.
2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | |
Nos. of members | ~23,000[2] | 22,689 | N.A. | (20,373) [3] | N.A. | 19,206 [4] | 18,490 | 17,634 [5] | 17,192 | 15,705 | 14,555 | 13,974 |
The detailed figures for 2010-2013 are taken from the membership figures for December of the year as summarized in Appendix D of the Year end 2013 Financial report item 13 March 2014 (PDF format); for 2007 and 2008 from the Annual Report 2008 and for 2009 from the Annual Report 2009. Note that the figure for 2005 gives the membership numbers for September 2005 taken from the annual report 2008 Annual Report 2008. The figure for 2003 was taken from the Annual Report 2003-4 (p. 19, not available online). The estimate for 2002, when CILIP was founded, is taken from an archived copy of the CILIP Membership, 2 December 2002 page.
Note that a graph of the trends is available.

Feedback
[edit]I welcome comments on this proposal.
Are membership numbers before 2012 publicly available? I have been told that there were about 24,000 members when CILIP was founded but have been unable to find a reliable source for this information.

- Agree, and perhaps a little further. In addition to the table outlined by the suggester, the most recent official membership number is always present in the RHS badge panel, as per the entry for the American Library Association. Membership number(s) give a good metric as to the size of the organization. Silversprite (talk) 14 July 2014 — Preceding undated comment added 16:00, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, it would be useful to extend the CILIP Infobot information with additional factual information beyond the logo, creation date and web site URL it currently has. As you suggest the American Library Association entry would be a good one to look at. BrianKelly (talk) 16:33, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- My revisions to the main text of the article now include the estimated membership on CILIP's foundation (in the History section), and the current estimate (in the infobox). I think these are sufficient to demonstrate the decline without having to depend on the mixture of sources. Addedentry (talk) 21:50, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Proposed New Article on CILIP Scotland
[edit]It has been suggested that there should be a new Wikipedia article on CILIP Scotland. I suggest that this proposal is discussed here.
Some things to consider:
- Is 'CILIP Scotland' noteworthy? It could be argued that it is just a CILIP regional group. Should there therefore not be articles for all the CILIP regions? What makes CILIP Scotland significantly different to other regions?
- What sources of information should be used if it is decided to create a CILIP Scotland article? Note that it would not be appropriate to simply reuse content from the CILIP Scotland web site.
- Who should create an article? Note that staff who work for CILIP Scotland would not have a neutral point of view?
Feel free to discuss this proposal on this talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisbk (talk • contribs) 17:31, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Merger discussion
[edit]I am proposing merging the content of the CILIP in Scotland article into a section of the CILIP article, where it is more likely to be kept up to date. Addedentry (talk) 08:03, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
- Merger implemented nem. con. Addedentry (talk) 10:40, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Citations needed
[edit]Following the recent merge of content from CILIP Scotland, I think two or three inline citations are still needed to verify some statements. I also suggest that a single sentence about CILIP Scotland is added to the lede paragraph. As I'll be demonstrating how to edit Wikipedia to a group of CILIP members next week, this is a perfect opportunity for them to practice adding these references, and improving each individual reference by adding more detail! "LILAC" listed at Redirects for discussion
[edit]A discussion is taking place to address the redirect LILAC. The discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 August 27#LILAC until a consensus is reached, and readers of this page are welcome to contribute to the discussion. PamD 08:25, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
Lists of historical CILIP presidents and CEOs
[edit]I noticed that there are ALA lists for past presidents, this could be a useful list for CILIP? eg: List of presidents of the American Library Association. If anyone would have the resources or ideas of where to find this? Rhagfyr (talk) 21:14, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- This feels like it would be good record-keeping if nothing else. There is a list of names on the wall in the Gladstone Room at CILIP in Rigdmount Street, which I think goes back all the way to the start of the Library Association - that might be the best source? 83.151.206.115 (talk) 13:06, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
