[edit]Merz was a close personal friend of Eddie Rickenbacker, and flew fighter planes in WWI. He married nine times.
Most of his memorabilia was donated by his widow, Eunice, to the Speedway Museum after his death from alcohol abuse. However, many photographs and other minutae (such as the silver cup from the 1911 Elgin Road Race and the altimeter from a German airplane) survive in the possession of her adopted daughter. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.202.10.39 (talk) 03:10, 29 October 2011 (UTC)
