While Nerina Shute, Charles's sister, wrote that Kathleen Cross adopted Charles, I have been in contact with a member of the family who says that is incorrect. So I have removed that assertion from Mrs. Cameron Shute and Nerina Shute.

While it seems likely to me that Kathleen Cross was the Hon. Katharine Cross, granddaughter of R. A. Cross, 1st Viscount Cross, a family connection through the Tory party, I have failed to find supporting references. The prep school in Sussex does suggest that Charles's aunt Jessie Aitchison at Woldhurstlea was involved, while the Cross family were near Broughton-in-Furness. Still, nothing solid to go on.
