A black sheep

It seems clear from Adelaide Drummond's testimony that Lister's marriage to Mary was initially kept secret, and it was probably not acceptable to the family.

There is no actual evidence to hand that the novel College Chums (1845) by Charles Lister is by this person, but it is plausible in terms of the family background in writing, timing and topic.

There is a short article in the Leeds Times during 1856 about Charles Lister's return to Weardley after about six years away in Australia.[1] It is tempting to think this is the Charles Lister of the article, who went then c.1850 to Australia after a period existing on handouts from Cradock.

In later life Lister lived at Anglesea, which was a settlement put up by a speculative builder near Gosport. Two daughters married, after his death.
