athletics details

[edit]

the details of his athletics career are incorrect. he did win the mile in the Oxford vs Cambridge match in 1864, but he did not defend it in 1865 when it was won by Richard Webster (Trinity, Cambridge). the Earl of Jersey was second and Charles Lawes did not run. he also did not win the AAC mile in 1865, for the simple reason that there was no AAC mile in 1865. the championship did not start until 1866 and Charles Lawes was the first winner, beating William Bowman of University College, Oxford into second place. see, for example, British Athletics 1866-1880 (2016) by Peter Lovesey and Richard Morbey, Bell's Life, Sat 1 Apr 1865 p. 7, and Field, Sat 1 Apr 1865 p. 21.
