Background
[edit]Hermite was a good Roman Catholic from childhood agnostic all of his adult life until the point where he contracted smallpox. It was during this time that Cauchy met with him a fellow catholic mathematician. He subsequently returned to the faith of his childhood.
this can be seen in the link provided at the bottom of the article the genealogy project.
Whether or not the article explicitly mentions that he was Christian is irrelevant. It is true, and thus hermite should be placed in the category.
I do fully support an expanding of this article though because Hermite is easily one of the most influential mathematicians of all time. unsigned post by ip editor —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.71.89.18 (talk • contribs) 07:17, 30 December 2006
- Hello. If you look at the category page [1] it is written on the first line that This is a category for mathematicians who identify as Christian and whose Christianity is relevant to their notability or historical significance.. It does not seem that this is the case for Hermite. S Sepp 13:35, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit]The two images on this page, one captioned "circa 1887" and the other captioned "circa 1901", appear to be taken from almost identical photographs, and it's surely implausible that they were taken 14 years apart. The 1887 date looks more reasonable, given that he was only alive for two weeks in 1901; so I've changed the other to 1887. If anyone knows any better please correct.
