The Who Was Who in the D'Oyly Carte site is normally reliable and authoritative, but I question whether it is right to say that Groves appeared in Tree's 1909 School for Scandal. There is no mention of Tree's production in the obituaries of Groves in the press archives. Groves had played Sir Oliver Surface at the St James's in 1907 (making him "an outstanding figure in the comedy", according to The Evening Standard) but this was the cast for Tree's 1909 production as recorded in The Times:
Sir Peter Teazle – Mr. Tree
Sir Oliver Surface – Mr. Henry Nevill
Sir Harry Bumper – Mr. Robert Cunningham
Sir Benjamin Backbite – Mr. Henry V. Esmond
Joseph Surface – Mr. Basil Gill
Charles Surface – Mr. Robert Loraine
Careless – Mr. Charles Quartermaine
Snake – Mr. James Hearn
Crabtree – Mr. Edward Terry
Rowley – Mr. Herman Vezin
Moses – Mr. Lionel Brough
Sir Toby – Mr. Carleton Rex
Trip – Mr. Godfrey Tearle
Lady Teazle – Miss Marie Löhr
Mrs. Candour – Miss Suzanne Sheldon
Maria – Miss Dagmar Wiehe
Lady Sneerwell – Miss Ellis Jeffreys
I think it significant that I can find no mention whatever of Groves's appearing in Tree's 1909 production in any of the reviews or obituaries available through Newspapers.com or the British Newspaper Archive. – Tim riley talk08:35, 11 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
