Sourcing Issues

[edit]

After coming across the issues discussed in the 20th Central Committee's talk page, I began looking more closely at the CSTC page itself to hopefully resolve my issues, but all I found were more issues. The first reference is to a WSJ article from March of this year, but the CSTC is only mentioned in this sentence: "A new Central Technology Commission will assume responsibilities for shepherding China’s efforts to develop new capabilities and know-how in strategic sectors." Yet, the section from the page does not utilize this information but instead uses a combination of material from elsewhere in the article that is only vaguely associated with the CSTC, while asserting the article states it exactly as presented. I cannot access the second link without subscribing to the SCMP, so I cannot gauge its relevance to the CSTC. The third reference is to a Reuters article, also from March. Like the first reference, it contains one sentence with regard to the CSTC: "Separately, China will establish a new Central Technology Commission to strengthen the party's centralised leadership over science and technology." I can see how this would pertain to the first half of the section, but I don't see where the second portion comes from. The section based upon the fourth reference seems to be the least glaring error, but an error nonetheless. When you click on the link, it currently comes to an error page, but using the Wayback Machine I am able to see the text in its original state. The pertinent section, translated into English, is as follows: "(3) Establish the Central Science and Technology Commission. Strengthen the centralized and unified leadership of the Party Central Committee on science and technology work, coordinate and promote the construction of the national innovation system and the reform of the science and technology system, study and review major national science and technology development strategies, major plans, and major policies, and coordinate and resolve major strategic, directional, and overall issues in the field of science and technology. , research and determine national strategic science and technology tasks and major scientific research projects, coordinate the deployment of national laboratories and other strategic science and technology forces, coordinate the integrated development of military and civilian science and technology, etc., and serve as the decision-making, deliberative and coordination body of the Party Central Committee. The responsibilities of the Central Science and Technology Commission's offices will be assumed by the reorganized Ministry of Science and Technology as a whole. The National Science and Technology Advisory Committee shall be retained to serve the Party Central Committee's major science and technology decisions and be responsible to and report to the Central Science and Technology Committee. The National Science and Technology Ethics Committee, as an academic and professional expert committee under the leadership of the Central Science and Technology Commission, will no longer serve as the deliberative coordination body of the State Council. The Central National Laboratory Construction Leading Group, the National Science and Technology Leading Group, the National Science and Technology System Reform and Innovation System Construction Leading Group, the National Medium and Long-term Science and Technology Development Planning Leading Group and their offices will no longer be retained. Provincial party committees’ coordination bodies for discussions in the field of science and technology are established based on actual conditions." However, the article says office of the commission is located at the newly reorganized Ministry of Science and Technology, which is not stated within our reference. Furthermore, none of the references listed (with exception of the SCMP article that I cannot access) mention Ding Xuexiang at all, so I am not sure why the aforementioned 20th Central Congress page had him listed as the head of the CSTC.

I apologize for the massive wall of text, but I'm still fairly new to the creation and editing of Wikipedia and am not sure how to proceed with this article given its many errors. I would appreciate help and/or guidance with tackling this. Atop21 (talk) 23:39, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Atop21: Thanks for raising these issues. In general you can be bold in fixing problems like this. I've made a couple of changes to better reflect the sources.
As for the Ministry of Civil Affairs source, I suppose the relevant sentence in the source is "中央科技委员会办事机构职责由重组后的科学技术部整体承担。" – but that's about the commission's responsibilities rather than its physical offices, so the sentence in the article should be rephrased. —Mx.
