Critical Reception

[edit]

No mention of criticism? Because, IMO (which doesn't count, I understand), this "group" and its ilk have bastardized real Irish music. I'd like to see some discussion of the difference between real Irish music and the various pop-sugar forms of exploitation. Avocats (talk) 03:03, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic Ho

[edit]

Perhaps in the trivia section we might add the recently-aired parody, "Celtic Ho"?

Fan sites

[edit]

I see that a couple of people have been modifying the site listings, and I agree with keeping out most of the fan sites. The main forum should stay because it gives people a place to ask questions that really doesn't exist in the other sites. The "celticwomanloversfansite" should probably be removed as it appears to have no traffic and is more of a 'plug', whereas the main forum site has over 1,000 posts and is read by the artists. I'll let someone else remove it to avoid being in a content war. Snagor 17:21, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fansites are not allowed unless they have come to play a major part in the community, and sometimes not even then. Forums are typically not allowed at all. See WP:EL "Links normally to be avoided" #10 and 11. -- Huntster T@C 17:58, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While I have visited a couple of the fan sites they are typically lacking in much biographical information. i.e. age, date of birth, marital status, etc. I can tell you this much, I have never been a fan of musicians or musical groups, but these girls have won me over with their tremendous talents and amazing beauty. If all Irish women are like these girl, I am definitely coming to Ireland to find a loving Catholic wife. These girls are simply stunning....beauty, talent, and brains. God has certainly blessed each of them many times over. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 152.2.240.117 (talkcontribs) 09:31, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

That's a rather strange way to find a life-partner. I can save you the trip though, because like every other country on earth, Ireland has a few beautiful women, a few ugly ones, and many average ones. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.107.183.201 (talk) 12:13, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my name is Shane Clark. If you are into Celtic stuff, chances are you know who I am and that I am avidly working to bring awareness to the Celtic culture. I own over 400 Celtic websites and teach regularly about topics that are related to the Celts. My most recent project is on Celtic women.

I have noticed that, here on the encyclopedia, Celtic Women also redirects to Celtic Women. I feel that this is a total misrepresentation of the modern Celtic Woman who also deserves their place on the encyclopedia and should be represented properly. I feel that if they are going to redirect Celtic women to this page that a section for Celtic women should also be included.

I have recently started a social network for Celtic women and would like it to be considered as being listed as a fan site, but not just for Celtic woman, for Celtic women, as I am friends with most all of the top Celtic artists, designers etc. This site will be including biographical information on each member of the Celtic Woman band as well as biographical information on top Celtic artists like Jen Delyth etc. It's not just for the Celtic Woman music group, but also for other women such as Ciara Considine who deserve recognition and may even one day do an appearance with Celtic Woman (which may well be in the works).

I realize that my site is new, but I am someone who actually knows what they are doing when it comes to websites. The reason I started this thing is for the reasons stated below that biographical information was not included on other sites and the musicians were not represented properly. I am also working with a promoter for two of the x members of Celtic woman on this project so it has a semi-official backing. You are all most welcome to join the site and make suggestions that you feel would be appropriate... or even write biographical information about the Singers in your own blogs, groups, forums etc.

Anyway, I do not know how to fix the redirect for the Celtic women issue so I am here asking that you allow space on the Celtic Woman page where Celtic women can be recognized also. The Celtic Woman group simply does not represent the entirety of Celtic women.

I can be contacted at http://www.celtic-women.net

Peace be the journey, Shane Clark United Celtic Nations —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.107.12.74 (talk) 15:10, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Shane. The reason the term "Celtic Women" redirects to this article is because it was a common misspelling or misinterpretation of "Celtic Woman", and no other article on Wikipedia uses this term. Note also that while "Celtic Women" redirects to this article, "Celtic women" does not (note the lowercase "w"). Either can be repurposed at any time, if the need arises. However, I honestly cannot think of a reason for creating an article specifically for Celtic women and using that title, considering there are existing articles devoted to demographics that this topic would be better suited for (which may be found in Category:Demographics of Ireland). If you can clarify what it is you are wanting to do with that article, it would be appreciated.
As for your website, no, it would not be appropriate for inclusion, as it is, despite whatever else is said, a fan site in the end. Look at it this way, if one personal site was allowed to be added, then we would have no grounds to deny any other personal or fan site. Please read Wikipedia:External links for an explanation of what is and is not appropriate for the external links section.
If you have any more questions or concerns, please leave a message here or on my talk page. Cheers. Huntster (t@c) 23:13, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vocalists on each track

[edit]

I'd like to add which vocalist performs the songs on all three albums so if someone has a problem with that speak now or forever hold your peace. I plan to add them in alphabetical order if a song is performed by two or more singers. --77.105.60.165 04:19, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I take it you will add this information to the individual album articles? I don't necessarily see a problem with that, though I would suggest creating tables to contain the information (look at how something similar was done for Fallen). -- Huntster T@C 08:42, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I tried, but I suck at this. Can you help me? A table is a better solution.--212.200.213.73 23:49, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, Celtic Woman (album) is fixed up. All you have to do is drop in the names between the "small" tags. Also, if you could double check the track times and supply any other data, it would be appreciated. Just let me know if you need any other help. -- Huntster T@C 08:02, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's done. Looks good if you ask me.--212.200.213.73 17:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks very good. I've removed the "Performed by" bit because it is redundant to the title of "Vocalists". I'll go ahead and convert the other two articles to tables as time permits. -- Huntster T@C 18:03, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I completed the Christmas album as well. Also I added the Billboard charts entries, but I couldn't find how the first album charted (maybe you know other source other than allmusic.com). One more thing, the Little Drummer Boy is credited to Chloë Agnew / Órla Fallon, however when I first heard it I didn't know who actually sang it but I could have sworn the 2 voice wasn't Chloë's. I'm still not sure. Doesn't sound like any of her other recordings. --212.200.213.73 19:31, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A New Journey has been converted, so have at it. I will attempt to locate something for the Billboard charts, but seeing as how I'm not a fan of including music charts on Wikipedia, it won't be at the top of my priority list. As for the vocalists, eh, if that is who they said sang it, then that's who we'll credit. No big deal. There's still a lot of work to be done to bring these Celtic Woman articles up to par, but we'll get there. Also, have you considered registering a username? -- Huntster T@C 20:21, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I separated out the DVD's and CD's in the discography section, you may want to create new pages for the DVD's (or extend the CD ones to include them). I'm not sure which way it should be, but Huntster should know :) Snagor 08:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I believe that, since they have the same release dates and similar content etc, that on the main page the CDs and DVDs should be combined, and not include the Billboard/Sales ranks. Let's leave the differentiation to the specific articles. I've *got* to get to sleep, but I'll work on this when I have some free time tomorrow (err, if I have some free time...). -- Huntster T@C 08:21, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What do you think about changing to Orla and Órlagn to Órla Fallon everywhere since that's how she's credited on the latest CD.--Zina Vukin 20:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I think she should definitely be credited as "Órla Fallon". This is also used on the CW website, though strangely, not on her personal site (though I imagine that is so as to not confuse visitors trying to pronounce her name, or somesuch). -- Huntster T@C 22:29, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As I understand it, her real name is Órlagh and her stage name is Órla because people were badly mispronouncing it. Since her personal site appears to be down (we'll have to figure out which of the two sites is correct), this is the link to the discussion: http://celticwomanforum.com/index.php?topic=90.0). With that in mind I'm not sure which way it should be displayed on this page... Snagor 07:33, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See, I'm torn as to which to use. I know that Órlagh is the correct spelling and I really prefer that, but when official media uses the "easier" spelling, I feel that should be used (not to mention, I worry about unknowing folks coming along and just changing Órlagh to Órla...not that it matters). Ugh, I don't know. How about I leave it up to you two to figure something out? -- Huntster T@C 08:21, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think definatelly go with Órla as that's how she titled her album as well. Now, there should be a note that explains the reason why the spelling is shortened, of course if we can find a proper quote. The reason why we should go with Órla is the same why Lisa went with Lisa Kelly as her 'stage spelling' instead of Laoise ní Cheallaigh. Let's face it how many of us non-Irish speaking people would know how to pronounce Laoise ní Cheallaigh? --Zina Vukin 22:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. That note, as you said if a ref can be found, would properly go on her personal article. -- Huntster T@C 22:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reorg and Rewrite

[edit]

Okay, so I've taken the liberty to remake the article. Please take a look and let me know if you see any errors. What I haven't included is information about the world tours. While there needs to be some information, it doesn't need to be exhaustive (such as including detailed stop information or song listings), and I haven't found much in the way of verifiable data regarding them. Otherwise, I'll begin working on the album articles next week, and will add what chart data that I can. -- Huntster T@C 09:23, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think some info like kickoff/end dates (of the entire tour, not individual city engagements) would be useful. Also some info on any particularly notable tour performances like notable special guests, opening acts, or non-traditional venues. Wl219 00:39, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One of the links is wrong, David Downes is Irish and considerably younger than the New Zealander the page links to. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.129.249.240 (talk) 14:51, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That has been corrected as of April 2, 2010. The article was split in two. -micro —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.112.192.100 (talk) 00:56, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I created a footer template to make it easier to navigate around the pages. Hopefuly it makes it easier for someone else also. You can click on the links in the top left of the template to adjust it as necessary with new album releases and whatever else may need to be linked to on all pages of the group. Any special editions?

[edit]

Apart from the first 2 albums and 2 editions of the 3rd, are there any special editions, or DVDs with bonus CDs? Worldwide? --77.105.57.235 02:00, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I've seen, and I don't believe their website lists any. -- Huntster T@C 03:46, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On amazon.com there is a set entiltled "Celtic Woman Complete Collection" that containes all four Celtic Woman DVDs.[1]Celticguy94 17:20, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hayley Westenra's Membership Status

[edit]

Hayley Westenra has been listed as a former member of the group, but there is no source or citation to remove her from the current members. It makes sense that, since she came on board to alternate with Méav, and since Lynn Hilary has taken Méav's place, Hayley is no longer needed. But again, that is only speculation. Are there any official reports to confirm this?

I have not seen or heard any offical news of Hayley Westenas membership status on Celtic Woman, but I do know that Meav is no longer a Celtic Woman and her name should be moved to the "Former Members" list. Celticguy94 00:05, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hayley is an unknown factor right now, but Meav is stated as taking an extended break. At least, that is how the news article on the site reads. -- Huntster T@C 00:16, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I heard the same news. Meav did the Christmas DVD with the group. I hope we get her back. We can't afford to lose Meav. It won't be the same without her. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.2.240.114 (talk) 23:33, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh do I ever agree. We can't afford to lose Meav. Hayley is a great addition and although I have yet to see or hear Lynn it won't be the same. All I can say to those in charge....GET MEAV BACK! We've already lost Lisa Kelly to maternity leave for this spring according to their official site. What's next NO Mairead? As usual they seem messing with a good thing and it could be fatal. I hope not.

Méav Ní Mhaolchatha

[edit]

On her offical website, she listed herself as 'formerly of Celtic Woman' and 'Méav has left Celtic Woman to focus on her solo career'. I'll move her to former member list.--Cahk 11:42, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding that. I've updated the rest of the article accordingly. -- Huntster T@C 23:14, 5 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Song for the Mira

[edit]

Can anyone provide info on the song the girls recorded with Anne Murray on her latest album (Duets: Friends & Legends)? I'm quite curious which of the girls made their appearance on the track Song for the Mira, originally written by Allister MacGillivray? --77.105.23.108 (talk) 21:55, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Acclaim

[edit]

I think missing from the short list at the top of the article of the popularity of Irish music, along with Riverdance, is mention of Mary Dillon's former group, Deanta, mention of Cara Dillon, and even the touch you hear in songs from Celine Dion. There's the influence for the original Riverdance. And there are the Narada 'samplers' of various artists, including I think a couple in this Celtic Woman cast.

Who founded Celtic Woman?

[edit]

This article currently specifies David Downes, but in articles such as this one Sharon Browne gets the credit. -micro —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.112.192.100 (talk) 01:22, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, that is curious. I'll look into this more over the next few days...your source is definitely more reliable than the existing sources for Downes, and to be honest, those sources should have never been used. Huntster (t @ c) 07:49, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will try to find other articles to back this up, but I believe Browne was a producer on the original show and later the first U.S. tour. In most of the interviews I've seen with the singers, they say that David Downes contacted them about being in the Helix show. I believe there's also an interview with David where he talks about getting the idea for the show. Depending on the aspect, I think it's safe to say that both had a part in the group's inception. Emtigereyes (talk) 16:42, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Compilations

[edit]

I took the liberty of adding two compilations to the "Discography" section. The first one, "An Irish Journey" was released in France in october 2011, and feature one new track, "The Water is Wide", sung by Lisa Kelly, Lisa Lambe, Chloe Agnew and Mairead Nesbitt, with the Bagad Lann Bihoué. The second, "A Celtic Christmas", will be released shortly (november 25th 2011) in Germany, and feature two new songs: "An Angel" and "There Must Be An Angel (Plying With My Heart)". It would also be interesting to list "A Celtic Family Christmas", which they did with The High Kings, but, as I don't know the release date, I didn't put it there. I also added "Believe", their newest album. Unfortunately, as the page for that new album doesn't exist right now (the page "Believe" is about the japanese compilation), it links there. Maybe someone who's better at this than me could make the necessary modifications ?

Membership graphic

[edit]

I think the article would greatly benefit from a graphic or chart mapping out who was part of the band when. Who wants to make it? 1 2 3 not it. 67.164.156.42 (talk) 09:00, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
