Is there a difference in how many games work in cedga vs wine
Does anyone know if there is a big difference in how many games work in cedga compared to how many work in wine (software)?Bawolff 00:36, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, there is a big difference, as Cedega/WineX has some support for newer versions of DirectX, whereas WINE does not. James Foster 03:57, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- okay. thanks. Bawolff 19:35, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I've like it so much I had it for 3 months. :) If I had money I would keep supporting them. ---T0ny 07:47, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)
- Yes there is a big difference.. One prime example would be WoW it works in Wine -- No longer works in cedega since the 2.2 patch -- still no fix from cedega 3 weeks later -- but they finally have acknowledged there may be a problem.. some 2 1/2 weeks late.. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.64.109.36 (talk) 02:00, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
Any reason why Gentoo is specifically mentioned? I don't see what makes a particular distribution so special in a section about CVS and licenses --Dirk Gently 18:15, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Because the Gentoo team tried packaging the CVS version of Cedega with their distro, and Transgaming threatened to scupper the CVS availability if they continued. Jamyskis Whisper, Contribs 29 June 2005 06:42 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks, that seems fitting, then. I didn't see the implication at first that Gentoo specifically had been targeted. --Dirk Gently 30 June 2005 08:44 (UTC)
- That being said, a similar thing has happened with Debian some years ago. Someone Debian developer announced his Intent to Package WineX, but received the same threat by TransGaming representatives. Plans to package WineX regardless ("Show thy face, tyrant!" --Macduff) didn't receive much positive feedback. Please refer to this mailing list post for the complete discussion. --Demitsu 14:01, 30 September 2005 (UTC)

NPOV Question: the section title Free riding on the free software community doesn't seem particularly neutral; although the section itself is balanced (and personally, I agree with the assertion), 'free riding' seems like it's more of an opinion of the FOSS community than a fact per se. I am thinking of setting it in scare quotes to distance the term from the body of the article, as the term seems one that would be used by the free-software community in reference to Cedega, and not by a NPOV observer. I will make the change but if people are vehemently opposed I will not pursue it. Thoughts? -- Kadin2048 18:36, 25 December 2005 (UTC)
- I can't see it doing any harm. The context of the passage makes it clear that it is opinion, but a couple of double quotes wouldn't hurt to clarify that. Jamyskis Whisper, Contribs 10:33, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- I would agree with Kadin2048 that the section is POV, and strongly so. Wine released code under a given license, TransGaming used that code in a way that is in accordance with that license, and the FOSS community gets fossy (pun intended) because TG charges money for it. Big deal. If they didn't want commercial companies to use their code, why haven't they chosen a more restrictive license to begin with? Its not as if people are forced to pay TransGaming for their product. "Show thy face, tyrant", indeed. I consider that section another piece of the FOSS propaganda that is unfortunately so popular on the internet, and would vote for deleting it, or at least moving it to some article related to FOSS. (Yes, I have a strong POV on this, that's why I took this to discussion instead of being bold...) DevSolar 13:22, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
- "[...]FOSS propaganda that is unfortunately so popular on the internet". "Unfortunately"? FLOSS propaganda is as unfortunately popular as "eat more fruits and vegetables" or "practice more sports" propaganda could be. I don't see the point in seeking balance between those promoting praticing sports and those promoting the supposedly equally valid "stay home watching TV instead", and neither I do with FLOSS vs. Proprietary. — Isilanes 19:31, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- I have added that portion again as it's relevant information and even more with transgaming's intention to resync with wine —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phobos11 (talk • contribs) 01:50, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
I think Transgaming or some other party had a list of source components available that HAVE been given back to Wine. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find that list now. In any case, Transgaming is mentioned as contributor in the Wine FAQ so the claim that they didn't contribute ANYTHING seems to be wrong. Anybody got a clue? -- 131.246.194.46 10:31, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- wine's Here you have wine's changelog since 2005, if you search for "transgaming" you get 3 results. Those are their contributions and as you can see, they are minimal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phobos11 (talk • contribs) 13:08, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
List of games?
Is there a full list of games that are supported by Cedega? --Taylor 21:50, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks to Dave2 for correcting my rather embarrassing spelling mistake. Jamyskis Whisper, Contribs 29 June 2005 06:42 (UTC)

- Indeed. I have updated the page to reflect this and the latest version update. -- eps 18 July 2006 14:58 (UTC)
Reference links for Free riding
Could someone add links pointing to when WINE changed from MIT to LGPL and a statement saying that this was as a direct result of WineX?
81.96.206.228 06:54, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think they ever directly stated this was because of WineX, but this may help answer some questions.
current quality of the fork
maybe someone should mention that the official version of wine now has better directx support than cedega. I think it is relevant considering this was one of the reasons transgaming originally produced its fork--66.102.196.40 (talk) 03:49, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
