Size
[edit]Many wikipedia articles on islands describe them ambiguously as "small islands". The size, elevation, population (if any), surface features, and other things ought to all be in the article, in the first paragraph. I can get the size of this island at least approximately by measuring the length on Google maps, and sampling the width to get an average, then multiplying to get square miles and converting to acres. When I do that, I get 211 acres. A promotional travel site described the island as "200 acres of riverfront property", so I'm evidently pretty close. Can I say 200 acres instead of "small" and cite google maps? Sbalfour (talk) 18:30, 7 June 2023 (UTC) Sbalfour (talk) 18:30, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
User:Sbalfour is determined to add a hatnote saying that "Cayuga islands may refer to islands in Cayuga Lake". This appears to be original research, as there is no mention of "Cayuga islands" at Cayuga Lake. User:Sbalfour, what is your source to support this edit? Could you please add it to Cayuga Lake, or revert your edit. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 21:53, 7 June 2023 (UTC)
- Glad you're here. I do see in the info box: "Islands 2 (Frontenac Island and Canoga Island)". When we refer to islands in the Pacific Ocean, for example, we usually do not say, "Pacific Ocean Islands" , but rather "Pacific Islands". Hence Cayuga Island(s). Assuming I'm looking for islands in Cayuga Lake, whose name I do not know, and believe there may be only one, I search for Cayuga Lake Island, and get nothing, So I search for Cayuga Island, and get the one on the river. That's not the one I expect. But if there's a hatnote to follow, it takes me to the Lake article, where I see Frontinac Island, which matches the description I have, and another island I was unaware of. In cross referencing the encyclopedia, we should be be liberal, because the encyclopedia is a vast place, and getting to an unexpected place with no way to go forward is a common experience. I will of course abide by majority consensus. Sbalfour (talk) 03:12, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
