I have added this one: http://abc.go.com/shows/2020/episode-guide/2017-04/14-041417-hooking-a-catfish
I propose we add more. Zezen (talk) 12:42, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
I propose to add more about how catfishing is used by social media users and their motive behind it. I will add information about how catfishing is a new form of cyberbullying. I will also discuss how to detect and avoid a person who is using a fake identity to catfish other users. Additional information needs to be added about how catfishing became the popular term for fake identities online. Skylarfogerty (talk) 15:45, 22 February 2018 (UTC)

Possible Origins/early use
The term catfish is used by Arthur Crudup in "My Mama Don't Allow Me" (1944, Bluebird Records, 34-0717A), and he must have heard it from somewhere before then. This record can be heard at the Internet Archive. Should I add this info to the article? Mongoosander (talk) 00:48, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

This entire article is low effort and there should be more effort put into confirming that, as the Wikipedia article mentions : "a social network account" is used. The truth is that "Catfishing" has been around well before the existence of the Internet and it's definition should not (and factually does not) depend solely upon the existence of the Internet. Nor does "Catfishing" only occur on the Internet. It does happen IRL too.
Alternate origin possibility
One of the earliest cartoons about the issues of being anonymous online was 1993's On_the_Internet,_nobody_knows_you're_a_dog. Dogs, which are famously the arch-nemesis of cats, might be portrayed to behave like a cat online in order to deceive a cat. A 1997 cartoon, linked here, portrays this behaviour literally by showing a group of dogs infiltrating a cat chat room and behaving like a cat. -- Deltaray3 (talk) 13:02, 7 February 2019 (UTC)
Manti T'eo
I ran out of space in explaining the edit. Not sure if it was posted, so I'll repeat it here.
-- While I'm not intimately familiar with the Wikipedia rules on living persons, I doubt that "some people speculate" is enough of a tag to include a suggestion that Manti was in on the catfishing for publicity. Further, the citation that supposedly backs this up (a US ABC video) does not support the assertion. I removed the preceding sentence because there is no citation to support it.
