What actually happened was that Casper Holstein was kidnapped by a team working for a Dutch Schultz lieutenant named Sholem Bernstein who had owed Schultz money. Holstein claimed to have managed to avoid paying a ransom to either Bernstein or Dutch Schultz. As both men Casper Holstein and Schultz were paying off Tammany Hall he apparently paid Tammany Hall and arranged with leadership that the money was credited to Schultz.
