I added many Carpenter places and others. Descriptions can be added later. Jrcrin001 (talk) 06:59, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disambig verses List pages

[edit]

With the WP:DAB#Partial title matches not allowing partial names to disambiguation pages ... The following is provided.

  • See List of Carpenter related articles for Carpenter named animals, singing groups, communities, locations outside the USA, places in the USA, tools and items, miscellaneous and other related Carpenter names.

That page is a "LIST" page - it contains everything in the Carpenter (disambiguation) page plus partial Carpenter names. For "Carpenter" name use, it is much more helpful/useful/functional/practical than the disambig page. Jrcrin001 (talk) 16:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No. The solution to a disambiguation page cleanup that you don't like is not to create another page, exactly like the old disambiguation page but called a "list" instead of a disambiguation page, and then to try to replace the disambiguation page with your new "list" page.
The reason disambiguation pages are limited to links that could actually be referred to as the disambiguated term is because those are the links that users might be looking for when they search for that term. There is no reason to think that a user would search on the word "Carpenter" looking for the article on carpenter ant. A carpenter ant is not, to my knowledge (and you are free to correct me) referred to as "carpenter." It is referred to as a "carpenter ant."
A page listing terms that include the word "carpenter" is no more useful than a disambiguation page listing terms that include the word "carpenter." If I nominated your List of Carpenter related articles (which is not a list of "Carpenter related articles"; it is a list of "articles with Carpenter in the title") for deletion, I am very very confident that it would be deleted. The only reason I have not nominated it for deletion is to be nice. I do not know what purpose you think that list serves, or how you think a user would benefit from a list of completely unrelated topics, or why you think it is more "helpful/useful/functional/practical" to send a user to a long list of topics, most of which they are almost definitely not looking for, instead of to send them to a short list of topics that they could reasonably be looking for.
If you continue to try to replace the disambiguation page with your list, I will nominate the list for deletion. Linking it from the bottom of the disambiguation page is more than enough. Propaniac (talk) 17:21, 28 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Move dab page

[edit]

In my opinion, this dab page should be moved to Carpenter, which is currently a redirect to Carpentry. Any thoughts on the subject? 85.228.209.104 (talk) 00:23, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, but I too was over ruled. Jrcrin001 (talk) 15:08, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion complaint

[edit]

Cohee has questioned the deletions I've made. In particular, Carpenter's Battery has been restored. This, along with a large number of other entries currently on the page, runs afoul of WP:PTM. It is not synonymous with "Carpenter". Looking at just the communities and settlements section alone, everything from Carpenter Place to Carpentersville should be deleted with extreme prejudice. And what the heck's the deal with Kate's Mountain?! Clarityfiend (talk) 01:30, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Carpenter's Battery was named for a Carpenter, so it's another use of the surname that needs disambiguation from other uses. Same for the place names you list. Kate's Mountain was named for a Carpenter woman. It appears that I have misinterpreted one of the arcane WP rules.Cohee (talk) 09:54, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Pages like this one (there are others on WP) seem to be most useful to WP users who are transitioning from paper-based encyclopedic references to electronic. Since it is useful, is there a way to present it in which it would not violate a rule and be deleted? Cohee (talk) 12:13, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This is not "List of everything remotely linked to anything or anybody called or named Carpenter". This is a disambiguation page, intended to disambiguate various things named or called Carpenter. That is its only purpose. See our Manual of Style entry regarding disambiguation pages. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:16, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Clarityfiend clarified that for me, and yes I should have picked up on the specificity of the term to begin with; my question now is whether there is a way to present a similar list that would be useful to people looking for related articles. Thanks for any helpful guidance you can share.Cohee (talk) 14:16, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No. There used to be one, but it was deleted after a long discussion, as not being encyclopedic content and failing to meet our content policies; see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Carpenter named articles. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:04, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I really believe lists cross-referencing nominally related articles would serve a purpose for new users of WP transitioning from paper-based formats, but I see where that discussion has already played itself out. Thank you both for sharing your time and expertise. Cohee (talk) 21:30, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cohee it took a long time to figure out how to do this because it is part of some of the oldest parts of Wikipedia (before disambig rules and pages) and no one else seemed to know or cared to know how to do it when I asked. The first code is {lookfrom|Carpenter} gives all Wikipedia articles starting with Carpenter. The second code is {intitle|Carpenter} which lists all Wiki articles with Carpenter in the title. The second is has multiple pages while the first is all on one page.

I placed them a while ago on the primary Carpenter surname and related pages. Hopefully this resolves your "... question now is whether there is a way to present a similar list that would be useful to people looking for related articles." Jrcrin001 (talk) 06:29, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No. We decided a long time ago that we don't need such a list in Wikipedia. You can set up your own CarpenterWiki and put whatever you want into it; but it has clearly been established that such content is not appropriate in Wikipedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 07:16, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
