[edit]Throughout this Wikipedia article there are many things to be improved upon an added. Trying not to discredit the researching the editor did to make this page, we would like to point out some of the problems we see throughout, hopefully making it easier to make edits on the page.
To start, there is close paragraphing throughout, as many facts have been pulled from the sources and simply placed within the article. After reading the source material and returning to the article, we feel as we are reading a copy of the source with minor, insignificant changes. For example, the sentence “the team’s analysis has only needed minor adjustments since being published in 1910” is a piece of information pulled from the book,The Role of Women in the History of Geology[1] . The exact sentence within that source is: “analysis has needed only minor correction in its details since.” This is obviously a simple rewording of the source material, with little to no development of information or original content.
We also found that the article seems to have a slight bias in the way that it displays Carlotta Maury as a woman who was entirely respected for only her scientific advancements. Throughout the article there is no mention of her relation to Portuguese nobility, “a connection which had an important influence on her career.” [2]These facts seemed to be purposefully excluded, especially considering one of the first sentences in the article: “Prejudice against professional women at the time did not affect Maury due to her extensive knowledge, recognized technical skills, and capabilities.” This sentence was distracting and difficult to prove as fact, considering prejudice was a large problem at the time. We believe that just because she was successful does not guarantee there is not an important story of prejudice and gender inequality in her story.
Additionally, we found that in the "career" section of the article, there seems to be facts, or viewpoints, which are unsupported or underrepresented. Firstly, the statement "The team’s objective was to investigate oil-rich areas off the coasts of Texas and Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico". There is little insight as to why the team was investigating oil rich areas, and it’s significance. The statement following immediately after "The information provided was the first significant geological information about the oil-producing area it is today", contains the same issue. The article states it was the first significant geological information about the area, however, there seems to be no support or additional information to prove this claim. The same issue occurs shortly after in this section with the statement "Her findings of fossils and fauna were the first of their kind in the Caribbean and South America". Again, no apparent evidence is provided to support this statement. All together, the main visible issue within the "career" section of the article is there needs to be additional info and evidence provided in order to support the information that is present.
Finally, some interesting and important information was left out of this Wikipedia article. The “Early Life” segment within the article is short and concise, simply stating the professions and (briefly) the interests of her family members. Her father’s fascination with “natural objects” is never mentioned, even though this is a huge influencing factor in why Maury may have been so passionate about geology. Her expeditions throughout her schooling was also not mentioned, nor her geological expedition with Arthur Clifford Veatch to Venezuela. These expeditions and understanding her outstanding work throughout her early life as well adds to her credibility and understanding her trusted place in a society and field dominated by men.Ashleyviss (talk) 05:22, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
