Date of birth and birth name
[edit]I see very little agreement among sources about this, yet no discussion anywhere, just a pile of (different) assertions:
- 14 June 1902: NNDB, German WP
- 14 January 1905: The Independent
- 1907: LA Times (it does not give a precise date, but says he was aged 97 at death in December 2004)
- 14 January 1908: The Guardian
Also, German WP says his birth name was "Carl Cäsar Willy Simon". That later became Eichberger, and later Esmond. But everywhere else says he was born Eichberger.
So, whom are we to believe about these details, and why? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:20, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- I have added two notes supporting 14 January 1908, using the Guardian citation that you provided and a second source that I found. Unfortunately, as you said, the LA Times article does not give a precise date of birth. When I tried the link to the Independent, all I found was a page of current news headlines and pictures. As for the 1902 version, I don't think we can cite another version of Wikipedia, and I don't know whether NNDB is considered reliable for WP purposes. Perhaps something more will turn up later.
