Multiple issues regarding this article.

[edit]

First off, the school may not meet the Wikipedia notability guidelines. It seems to just be a normal private Catholic school.

Second off, from the uncited, probably original research, citation of the school's website, and advertisement-like tone, it's pretty clear that someone connected to the school wrote this.

I propose the deletion of the article. --Rainythunderstorm (talk) 10:08, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Conflicting sources on Cardinal Newman's name

[edit]

Cardinal Newman's official website says that it was renamed like this:

  • originally named Ursuline High School for Young Women in 1858
  • New school was opened by the same group called St. Peter's School in 1872
  • St. Peter's was renamed to Ursuline High School again in 1887
  • 1957 the school was transferred to Most Reverend J. J. Russell, Bishop of Charleston, and was renamed Catholic High School of Columbia
  • In 1961 the school moved locations again and finally arrived on the name Cardinal Newman.

However, this Gettysburg Times article from 1970 says this:

  • Named Ursuline HS before purchase
  • Was renamed to Cardinal Newman HS when the diocese purchased it in 1955

Are there some more definitive/official sources on this? While the stories are similar, the dates don't add up completely. Ukulelevillain (talk) 20:15, 14 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

August 2024 Lawsuit

[edit]

An editor wishes to include information regarding a student lawsuit [1]. I removed this citing WP:NOTNEWS - Wikipedia is not a newspaper. This is a policy. I pointed to the 10 year test and WP:TOOSOON because as it stands there is no indication this will be notable information about the school in 10 years time. If not, it should not be in an encyclopaedic article. It certainly should not be pretty much the only thing we are saying about this school. This is very much WP:UNDUE information. Wikipedia is a lagging indicator of notability. The lawsuit would have to be shown to be notable before we covered this. Note that the news report is a WP:PRIMARY source - see especially WP:PRIMARYNEWS. There would need to be secondary sources covering this to demonstrate any kind of notability. Until that is established, it should remain out of the article. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 17:58, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You misinterpret the policies. The Not News policy relates to using Wikipedia like a newspaper. I also did include a secondary source, yet you still claim the policy is being violated. This is a discrimination and sex abuse lawsuit against the school, and since it even involves a Catholic school, I fail to see how more than 10 years policy is being violated. The Catholic church has had a history of sex abuse lawsuits remembered for more than 20 years.Speakfor23 (talk) 18:01, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This [2] is edit warring. I suggest you self revert. I pointed you to WP:ONUS which is policy. I pointed you to WP:NOTNEWS which is also policy. You are providing news reporting of a student lawsuit of unknown significance, sourced only to a news article. This does not belong in the article. ETA: Thank you for the self reversion. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 18:06, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
