According to a real nombramiento in the Indies Archive (PATRONATO,293,N.25,R.49),already Carlos de Luna y Arellano was titled "gobernador y capitan general" in 1603. His successor, though, from 1612-1617, apparently was only gobernador again before the captain-general title became customary. --85.127.181.26 (talk) 17:14, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

[edit]I'll be –
- adding some full references and their content, especially re governance and political geography,
- swapping the current former country infobox for the former subdivision one as this seems to always have been a division of New Spain.
