Inaccuracies

[edit]

There are two inaccuracies in the section headed 'First Landing, 1902'.

1. The date of the landing is incorrect (see 'Edward Wilson: Diary of the Discovery Expedition' Ed. by Ann Savours and published by Blandford Press, London, in 1966 p 104-6). The landing was made on 22nd January 1902, and not June, which would have been mid-winter and in complete darkness. 2. The article wrongly states that they saw an Emperor penguin colony. They did see an Adelie penguin colony, as recorded in Edward Wilson's diary, complete with drawings of the penguins, which make it very clear which type of penguins they were. No mention is made in the journal of an Emperor penguin colony for the simple reason that it would not have been there at this time of year. The Emperors breed on ice during the austral winter and the colonies break up when the ice does in November/December. They would all have gone well before the end of January.
