Talk:Canon 915
Freemasonry
[edit]I think canon 915 has also been historically used for Freemasonry, but I would need a better source for that. The older law was called canon 2335, but since 1983, the rule in place is canon 1374, which also bans Masons from communion. There are also reports that certain Feminine and Grand Orient lodges have taken a pro-choice political position, which would place affiliated politicians under at least two different canonical penalties (see Talk:Catholicism and Freemasonry). Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that "Catholic politicians, abortion and communion or excommunication" be merged with "Canon 915".
- The articles cover substantially the same topic, as the former is a subtopic and particular instance of the canonical jurisprudence contained in the latter.
- The former is more appropriate on the page dedicated to Canon 915, wherefrom the controversy arises.
- The "Canon 915" article can hold "Catholic politicians, abortion and communion or excommunication" without becoming unwieldy.
I have proposed this formally since my informal merger was contested. Canon Law Junkie §§§ Talk 03:37, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose. Sources cover this primarily as a political topic, not as a piece of canon law trivia. Sometimes the sources mention this part of canon law, sometimes they don't; obviously this is not primarily a canon law topic and should not be merged. If canon 915 can't support an article on its own, that's a problem to be solved with a delete or with a merge somewhere else, not with merging a proper article here. –Roscelese (talk ⋅ contribs) 03:53, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- Nobody said "canon 915 can't support an article on its own". Canon Law Junkie §§§ Talk 04:06, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- It is not "obviously...not primarily a canon law topic", since it seems to me to be a topic within the jurisprudence of Canon 915, and I for one support its being merged.
- It is also a political topic, but one that arises over the correct application of canonical jurisprudence (what you term "canon law trivia"). You yourself grant that "[s]ometimes the sources mention this part of canon law", and those are your political-related sources. The other type of source related to this topic, the sources relating to canonical jurisprudence and canon law legal history, most certainly treat this topic as a subset of the jurisprudence of Canon 915. Canon Law Junkie §§§ Talk 04:14, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- Retraction. I have decided to retract my merger proposal, not because I concede that the "Catholic politicians, abortion and communion or excommunication" article is not a subset of canonical jurisprudence so far as it concerns the Eucharistic discipline of Canon 915, but because the article also talks about excommunication, a topic in the penal jurisprudence of canon law outside the jurisprudence of Canon 915. That being said, I would like to revise structurally the "Catholic politicians, abortion and communion or excommunication" article so as to make a distinction between the sacramental law jurisprudence of Canon 915, and the penal law jurisprudence of Excommunication, and various bishops attempts at implementing both. Denial of Holy Communion
[edit]Thucyd, I have moved your proposed content regarding recent cases involving the denial of Holy Communion to this article. --PluniaZ (talk) 02:31, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- I think this content should be kept to a minimum, considering that we already have Excommunication of Catholic politicians who support abortion and that few, if any, of the sources mention Canon 915 by name. I think we owe it to our readers to ensure that material is relevant and DUE by locating references that indicate Canon 915 was actually invoked, and we should consider why this material is not more suitable for the main article on pro-abortion politicians, of course Biden surely is one of the foremost. - I wasn't aware of that article when I added this here. I agree it would be more appopriate there. --PluniaZ (talk) 03:45, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Canon 915's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
