Overview
[edit]I'll take this on as part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/January 2022 Mujinga (talk) 15:25, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for an informative read, I've made comments below and am confident this article can soon meet all the GA criteria. I'll put the article on hold for now, drop me a line when you are done or need clarification.
- Thank you for taking up this GAR. I'll respond to your comments in the coming days. Morgan695 (talk) 19:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Copvio check
[edit]- Nothing to worry about from earwig check
Pictures
[edit]- File:日本の伝統文様における代表例<麻の葉>.jpg license ok, i wonder if it would benefit from being placed lower down in the text
- perhaps you missed me suggesting moving this, in any case that's not a pass/fail issue Mujinga (talk) 07:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- The image was originally the lead image of the article, but there was an edit dispute over the infobox taking precedent. There's nowhere else in the article where the image really fits, so I decided to just leave it as-is. Also added alt text for images
- brilliant! Mujinga (talk) 23:33, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- per WP:MOSALT it's recommended to add "alt" descriptions for images Mujinga (talk) 07:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- File:Kyushu island drawing.jpg license ok
- File:Katabira (single layer kimono) in pale blue-green hemp with wave, plum tree, and butterfly design, 1746-1841 AD - Edo-Tokyo Museum - Sumida, Tokyo, Japan - DSC06780.jpg license ok
- File:Noren (curtain), Japan, Meiji period, Honolulu Museum of Art.JPG license ok
- File:Shinto oonusa whole hemp.jpg license ok
- File:Dame-Zettai.jpg license ok, on the caption, is it missing a "。" at the end?
- Added.
- would it be possible to add a photo of Saya Takagi or Junichi Takayasu?
- There's no existing photo of Takayasu; there's File:Takagisaya-shimbashi-july7-2016.jpg of Takagi, but I'm not sure there's room for it under Legal status or Modern use without causing a MOS:SANDWICH issue, and she's not referenced in the reform section.
- thanks for checking! Mujinga (talk) 07:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Lead
[edit]- Will come back to this last
- This is actually a pretty good summary of the article. Two paragraphs seems sufficient, it could just be bulked out a bit by going through the sections and checking something is summarised from each.
Prehistoric and ancient Japan
[edit]- The plant was cultivated - suggest "the plant was grown" or similar, purely to avoid another mention of cultivation
- Done.
- This section relies rather heavily on one source, namely Clarke & Merlin. They seem authoritative but it might be good to add other references if they exist.
- I looked, but it seems to be the definitive English-language source on the topic that most other scholarly sources and news outlets reference.
- thanks for checking that as well Mujinga (talk) 07:20, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Classical and feudal Japan
[edit]- I'm enjoying the writing style.
- Thanks!
- While wealthy classes perhaps While the wealthy classes?
- Done.
Early modern and post-war Japan
[edit]- 20th American historian - I'm guessing 20th century
- Added.
- while wild cannabis growth remains an ongoing concern in parts of Hokkaido - concern for who? i cant access the japantimes article but Clarke & Merlin seem to suggest its just growing as a weed in the hills
- Clarified.
- Can I query you meant to say "roughly 80 percent of the total wild cannabis" since it seems strange to know how much wild cannabis exists Mujinga (talk) 07:21, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Per Japan Times,
However, wild cannabis has been known to sprout in early summer, including in Hokkaido, where inmates at Abashiri prison in September found three pot plants growing inside its facilities. In 2003, Hokkaido’s health and welfare bureau cut down 1.47 million wild marijuana plants, or approximately 80 percent of the wild cannabis found in Japan.
- thanks for the info, that clears that up Mujinga (talk) 23:32, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- Per Japan Times,
- the intervention of Emperor Hirohito - can you expand a bit on what exactly he did?
- Clarified.
- violation - violations
- Done.
Legislation and policy
[edit]- 'national Japanese law - is Japanese needed here?
- Rephrased.
Penalties and violations
[edit]- ok
As hemp
[edit]- as of 2016, there are 37 - suggest as of 2016, there WERE 37
- Revised.
- Done.
As a drug
[edit]- Mention of Saya Takagi fits well here but it does also seem separated from the other mentions in penalties and violations. Also, there's the Toshiba team rugby player scandal, would that be worth mentioning?
- Revised to acknowledge Takagi in both sections and added rugby scandal
- much improved, nice! Mujinga (talk) 07:23, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Reform
[edit]- As you can see in hisotry, I've moved some full stops eg "is essentially nonexistent." to "is essentially nonexistent". - i think it's better that way but happy to discuss
- Looks good to me.
- someone pointed me to MOS:QWQ today but i think what i did was good Mujinga (talk) 23:33, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- used by legalization activists suggest used by activists since legalization is already used earlier in the sentence
- Done.
See also
[edit]- Since this could be taken as an overview article of the topic of cannabis in Japan, perhaps Cannabist Kansai and Kyoto Hemp Forum could be moved into the article.
- I didn't include either of them in the article body because they appear to be fairly marginal, at least in terms of their coverage in secondary sources, e.g. the only English mention of Cannabist Kansai appears to be in this High Times article
Notes
[edit]- ok
References
[edit]- what are currently refs 25 and 32 could have their titles translated
- Done.
