Cannabis and Broccoli
[edit]- Cannabis, despite recent legalization efforts, is still a taboo subject, which is likely the biggest reason there has been no cannabis Emoji added to Unicode yet.
- Cannabis culture, as can be seen on emojipedia ( https://emojipedia.org/420/ ), has resorted to use the herb emoji (🌿), the tree emoji (🌳) and the broccoli emoji (🥦) to represent cannabis in emoji form. Of these, as far as I can see, the broccoli is very much the most popular.
- This usage has spread from mere emoji substitution to broccoli becoming a symbol for cannabis. This is evidenced by (a) a magazine called "Broccoli - Magazine for Cannabis Lovers" having been founded (see Architectural Digest: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/cannabis-flower-art-weed-home-decor and also the article Broccoli (magazine)) and (b) a Cannabis company producing advertising using a broccoli mascot (see Yahoo Finance: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/weedmaps-tackles-cannabis-marketing-censorship-130000832.html ) and (c) a Song called "Broccoli", see Broccoli (song) which is very obviously about cannabis.
- I think it is reasonable to expect at least some people not knowing this background being confused by this very non-standard use of Broccoli.
- I don't know about you, but when I am confused, my first path to clear it up is usually Wikipedia.
- Accordingly, I assumed it would be helpful for such people to add a note somewhere indicating this, something along the line of "In 2020s cannabis culture Broccoli has become a symbolic stand-in where mentioning Cannabis is not possible or appropriate."
- I wanted to add something like that to Broccoli, and wanted to discuss this on its talkpage but was reverted (on the talkpage, not the article).
- After asking for help on WikiProject Cannabis, Kingsif (thanks!) wrote with me on my talk page and then suggested I bring the discussion here.
- I still think the scenario described above will lead people to look at the Broccoli page, not on Cannabis culture, but well, that is just my opinion.
- I have some further sources for the connection here: MSN - https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/news/why-broccoli-cannabis-companies-grapple-with-marketing-and-advertising-hurdles/ar-AATHtk5 and the Daily Mail https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9789987/Hidden-drug-meanings-common-emojis-revealed.html, also the Museum of Modern Art: https://www.moma.org/calendar/events/5024 and AdWeek: https://www.adweek.com/brand-marketing/why-this-broccoli-is-fed-up-with-cannabis-censorship/
- That's it. Cheers.--91.64.59.58 (talk) 20:46, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- I actually added it to Broccoli (disambiguation), which is where i think it belongs. Might be useful here as well, tho, so please discuss. 91.64.59.58 (talk) 20:58, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- None of these sources is WP:RS. This is a fringe issue, with no WP:WEIGHT for your proposal. You appear to be determined to make this vague connection based on an emoji, raising the possibility of a WP:COI, which you are obligated to reveal if it applies. Zefr (talk) 21:21, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- LOL. I hereby declare I have no conflict of interest, i hold no financial interest in either cannabis or broccoli companies, nor do I have any connections to DRAM or Lil Yachty or the magazine. I rarely use emojis, and have only ever used the broccoli emoji on wikipedia, and only within the last few days. The only connection I have, like at all, is that I have consumed both plants before. Is that enough of a reveal for you? --- Back to the actual content: I sincerely can not understand why you reverted my Broccoli (disambiguation) edit. Did you even look at it, before you reverted? As to WP:WEIGHT, the disambiguation page itself already contains it, it just isn't explained. There are two articles in the list, where "Broccoli" means cannabis:
- Broccoli (magazine) is a "magazine for cannabis lovers". Weird that this magazine made the same "vague connection based on an emoji".
- Broccoli (song) has two instances where the term appears, one is "I'm rollin' up my broccoli" and the other is "All she want to do is smoke that broccoli". Sounds not like Brassica oleracea.
- What i did is point out this connection by adding the sentence "In cannabis culture Broccoli has been used as a stand-in for Cannabis:" above these two listed articles. What exactly is your problem here? 91.64.59.58 (talk) 23:12, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- This is a fringe relationship and weak content, WP:FRINGE, with no reliable sources. I suggest you drop it, WP:DEADHORSE. Zefr (talk) 23:54, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Zefr:, I suggest you stop following this user's various talkpage comments if you have nothing productive to add. This is a valid avenue of discussion - and all they want to do right now is discuss - yet you insist that the topic is pointless and can't even be discussed (but, as I see it, the view is currently 2-1 against you). Whatever you have against this, drop it. Either participate in good faith or don't comment at all. Kingsif (talk) 00:54, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

- IP, I was actually thinking that a new subsection about euphemisms in general could be created; using them is a large part of cannabis culture but it is currently not mentioned at all. Even R/trees redirects to the article, but is not discussed. And besides the Daily Mail, your sources are fine and can be sifted through to see how prevalent "broccoli" as a euphemism has become. It would seem to be widely accepted, though, since dictionary.com says
When not referring to the actual vegetable, broccoli is slang for “marijuana.”
; the List of slang names for cannabis is exactly that, a list without any cultural explanations/relevance. This TIME article discusses why cannabis has so many slang terms and a bit of the culture of new ones coming about (and broccoli is mentioned). Kingsif (talk) 01:03, 23 March 2022 (UTC)- I am sure none of these sources are reliable enough for Zefr. I am very frustrated and (having other pressing problems in my life) will not pursue this further and take a long break from Wikipedia (at least until these problems have been resolved). I thank you very much, Kingsif, for your thoughts and your time, and I apologise for leaving it now, but I just can't. 91.64.36.101 (talk) 12:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

US centrism
[edit]Most of the first half of the article is almost entirely dedicated to US culture. The non-US sections that exist are underdeveloped. I suggest either separate the sections or rename in article to something like Cannabis Culture in the US. MexFin (talk) 09:31, 16 May 2024 (UTC)
Hipster
[edit]I could not find support for this argument, I'm challenging it's validity. I see the underlying thread of marijuana intertwined with countercultures, so I'm not yet removing but perhaps someone else could provide some valid sources. KTRAE03 (talk) 23:12, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
