What is the article about ?

Is it about a new kind of hip hop that people refer to as "Canadian hip hop" ? If so, I think the article should start like this:

Canadian hip hop is a kind of hip hop originated in Canada.

Otherwise, the article should just be renamed "Hip hop in Canada". What do you think about this ? Cheers Nicolas1981 (talk) 06:50, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

All of the articles about hip hop in individual countries are titled in the current format. While you do have a potentially valid point, it applies equally to all of them, not just here, and so this article shouldn't be moved in isolation — they need to either all be moved to the format you propose, or none. Poet laureate

Canadian hip-hop artist Cadence Weapon was the poet laureate of Edmonton from 2009 to 2011, which is definitely a first for Canadian hip-hop, and hip-hop in general. Not important enough to be mentioned in the article? --RaygunShaun (talk) 03:42, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Canadian hip hop/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

I think that this only talks about the late history of hip hop in Canada, although there was a definite scene prior to the recording artists. Perhaps some discussion on the crews that helped start it in, with references to the bboy crews, graf crews and the DJ/MC crews. In Toronto, some examples would be West Side Breakers, Four (??) Aces, Magnetic Rockers, Flip Rock, for some breaking crews. Then on the DJ tip, I'm thinking Sunshine, Killowatt, TKO, to name a few. These were the DJs and crews that inspired many of the "first" rappers, but they never get any shout outs, cuz it was ultra competitive in those early days, and nobody acknowledges how they got into it. These were the crews that were our urban radio back in the day.

In order to include content about these people, we would need to be able to cite it to reliable source coverage about them. It's not our role to conduct or publish our own original research about unsung pioneers who didn't get the media coverage they might have deserved — we rely on what can be verified by published coverage, and if that can't be provided for somebody then we can't cover them here. I'd certainly love to see a Have Not Been the Same-style book about the underrepresented early roots of Canadian hip hop, but without media coverage to support the content we can't be the originators of unverified and otherwise unpublished information.
