Separate page for the Local Government Area

[edit]

As per discussion at Talk:List of Sydney suburbs, I have created a separate page for the City of Campbelltown, the Local Government Area. -- Ianblair23 06:01, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the information in this article actually deals with the City of Campbelltown, and not the suburb. Braue 15:41, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The suburb is a big place, maybe there should be a writeup of the city, then the suburb? (PAuLw1985 05:55, 10 December 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Aboriginal History

[edit]

None of the information in the Aboriginal History section is referenced.

40,000 years seems like a random pluck out of the sky. —Preceding unsigned comment added by OzWoden (talkcontribs) 05:58, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed it to 30,000 based on a reference from the Wollongong City website referring to more than 30,000 years of occupation by the Tharawal. And I doubt the figure of 40,000 was plucked out of the sky. It is an often quoted figure and I suspect the person who wrote it was quoting from something (given the wording) but neglected to let us know what the reference was. Crico (talk) 20:07, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reference provided for the section does not exist, as such none of the information in the section was correctly referenced. I have deleted the section for now. Also the reference led to the Wollongong Council website even though this article is about Campbelltown. Two different cities. Odd. OzWoden (talk) 01:33, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have again edited the Aboriginal History section due to poor referencing and made up statements.
The reference to shell middens, and rock art is for the Illawarra region only (funny that, comming from a Wollongong Council website).
The rock engravings reference in the Wollongong Council website is not specific to Campbelltown as it only mentions Sydney (which is a large area and one cannot deduce that therefore they exist in Campbelltown).
Also there is no mention of axes in either reference. There is also no mention of 30,000 years of habitation of Campbelltown.
OzWoden (talk) 04:43, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou Crico for providing yet another reference.
It seems your method of contribution to wikipedia is to write up some nonsense left wing rubbish and then search for days and weeks on end for some slight mention of that rubbish in whatever source you can find. May I suggest a slightly different approach - find a fact first then contribute it.
I have not read the source, I do intend to, but without even reading it I can tell you that it is not reliable for stating the point about 30,000 years of habitation, since it was published in 1988. Carbon dating and other dating methods in 1988 were no where near as accurate as they are today. Please find a more recent and reliable source to make that claim. Aboriginal history section irrelevant

[edit]

The section, which I have now deleted, Aboriginal History was irrelevant to this article since the article is about the suburb of Campbelltown which did not exist until December 1820. If I were writing an article about John Smith I would not have a section about "John Smith prior to his birth" would I? No - that would not make sense. OzWoden (talk) 02:06, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Australia as a country didn't exist prior to 1901 so by your logic we shouldn't mention anything that happened here before then. The land that is now known as Campbelltown existed prior to 1820. It wasn't born then like John Smith. People roamed the land now known as Campbelltown long before 1820 so who they were and what they did is relevant to present day Campbelltown. Crico (talk) 04:00, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it is important that a comprehensive history of an area is given. Just because the place was named "Campbell Town" (and not Campbelltown until some years later) does not mean that prior to the naming it had no history. This is like making the mistake of Terra Nullius again! The mention of Aboriginal history is well referenced and should remain. Gillyweed (talk) 04:18, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article is about the suburb of Campbelltown - not the Local Council of Campbelltown, not the area of Campbelltown, but the suburb. The key word here is suburb (or town, or village etc). Prior to settlement there was no town or suburb. Thus there was no history of the town prior to the town being established. The content that you believe should be included, should not be included here but instead in some other article about the history of the Campbelltown area. P.S. OzWoden (talk) 09:52, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have rewritten the history of Campbelltown mainly because what was there was lifted directly from the Council website. But I assume you will want to delete most of it because it contains reference to John Macarthur who never lived in Campbelltown and Fisher's Ghost which technically appeared in the neighbouring suburb of Bradbury. Despite this, I believe that they and the Tharawal are relevant in the history of the modern suburb of Campbelltown. Crico (talk) 03:37, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou Crico for your contributions to the article and removing the plagiarism. And thankyou for replacing unreferenced garbage with referenced fact, and for replacing irrelevant statements with more relevant ones. These concepts have finally sunk in. You deserve a gold star. OzWoden (talk) 07:33, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The history of the Campbelltown area prior to its establishment as a suburb is entirely relevant. I have restored the passage you deleted which referenced a scholarly discussion of the record of inhabitation of Campbelltown. --bainer (talk) 11:30, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template problem

[edit]

I've not a clue as to how to resolve this issue. It appears that when Australie Australia template was removed, it caused the problem under the picture on the right, but I cannot confirm that is truly the problem. Quebec99 (talk) 20:12, 10 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bunbury Curran

[edit]

This district was originally known as Bunbury Curran.

The following note from Mr. Thterry to the late Mr. Thomas Moore, of Liverpool, shows the exertions he found it necessary to make, even at a time when his ecclesiastical authority was acknowledged by the government. It is without date, but was probably written in Governor Macquarie's time, as it was he that gave the name of Campbelltown to Bunbury Curran. "The Rev. J. J. Therry presents respeeful com. pliments to Mr. Moore, and begs leave to return him thanks for the polite communication he lately made him in answer to his letter. As he has to celebrate divine service tomorrow, at Bunbury Curran, at eleven o'clock, he is obliged to attend at Liverpool at seven o'clock in the morning, and would feel obliged if Mr. Moore could, without inconvenience, permit such of the government men as happen to be Catholics to attend at that hour at Liverpool,
