Crater and camouflet
[edit]I have read an account by Don Shaw https://www.chaddesdenhistorygroup.co.uk/adolfs-bombs of exploring a WWII bomb crater. He claims that a crater would have a camouflet under it, with a domed top forming the bottom of the crater, through which a sufficiently heavy person exploring the bottom of the crater would fall and be asphyxiated by the poisonous fumes.
This doesn't sound quite like the description here, which implies EITHER a camouflet OR a crater. Surely it the camouflet breaks the surface the ejected debris just falls back into the hole and fills the camouflet?
